Glastonbury to 'confirm cancellation' within 24 hours due to coronavirus

Organisers of legendary festival, Glastonbury, are allegedly “set to announce the cancellation” of the 50th-anniversary celebrations due to the current coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the nation.

Emily Eavis has previously stated that the mammoth weekend will go ahead despite fears of the deadly COVID-19 virus that has halted the UK.

She had earlier announced a star-studded line up for the festival’s 50th birthday, claiming it would be “the best show on earth”.

Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Sir Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Sam Fender and Diana Ross were set to headline the event when it opened its gates on June 24th before coming to an end on June 28th.

However, with speculation of the UK going into lockdown, it appears that Glastonbury could be the next major event being axed.

Across Britain, pubs, clubs and theatres have been closed following recommendations by the government to avoid potentially spreading the virus.

In Los Angeles, Coachella has also been rescheduled.

A fan page on Facebook named Glasto Chat claims that there is going to be a major staff meeting later this afternoon to confirm whether the festival will go ahead.

A post read: “I run the Glastonbury Reddit. We have paid festival staff on there. I’ve had numerous PMs from them to say they have been called into a big meeting scheduled for tomorrow.

“There should be an announcement very soon after to confirm the cancellation.

“Main reasons given will be the lack of medical staff, police support and impending balance deadline.”

A similar thread on eFestivals has claimed that the cancellation announcement is likely to be soon.

More than 200,000 people are set to descend on Worthy Farm, Pilton this summer to celebrate one of the biggest weekends in music.

A representative for Glastonbury has been approached for comment.
