Kate Garraway's husband Derek's heartrending response to her ageing fears

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway previously revealed her husband Derek Draper’s response when she shared her fears about getting older, and whether she should get plastic surgery.

This came three years before Derek fell ill with coronavirus in March, and he has remained in a minimum state of consciousness after suffering with complications from the illness.

But his wife opened up about her husband’s sweet comments to her when she turned 50 and worried about ageing in an extract from her 2017 biography ‘The Joy of Big Knickers’.

She recalled her “mid-life crisis” moments as she wrote the book, which were sparked by the celebrations of her 50th birthday.

After her colleagues at Smooth Radio decorated the studio with balloons and banners to celebrate the big day, she realised it was a “very big number”.

She wrote: “It made me think, ‘But I am going to be 50 and it feels like… you should have achieved things or be content with things’.

“I thought, ‘I’m still overstretched, overworked, feeling like I’m not being as good a mum as I should be or as good at work as I should be’. I needed to take stock.”

Not only that, she considered having cosmetic surgery after she worried about her wrinkles and looking youthful while she presented on TV.

She added: “I pretty much wanted a facelift quite obsessively for ages. But everyone said it wouldn’t make any difference at all.”

A GMB make-up artist told her to work on her diet, fitness and life choices first before going down the surgery route – as she had seen it go wrong so many times.

Kate continued: “We see all the weird nips and tucks where people have gone too far.

“You need to look at all the other things first because they create the youthful energy that we’re all after, rather than being wrinkle-free.”

Kate continued to fret about it, and eventually brought the idea to her husband Derek, who shut down her negative self-talk with touching words.

Garraway recalled: “My husband thought I was bonkers. He said, ‘Don’t do that!’ He thinks it’s ridiculous. He wouldn’t want me to do it.”

Derek gushed about his wife last year when she appeared on I’m A Celebrity, as he told Lorraine Kelly that the TV stint had rekindled his feelings for her.

He said: “I am falling in love with her all over again to be honest. Because you see how clever she is, funny, and stunning.”

Derek also admitted that seeing her flirt with Myles Stephenson made him jealous, adding: “At first I was getting jealous and paranoid and then I remembered she is my wife and she is coming home to me.

“So I am the winner really,” adding that his wife was “a total knockout.”

The pair had been planning to renew their vows in a second wedding when he fell ill with coronavirus, and was placed into a coma after suffering from complications.

Derek has been brought out of his coma and is in a minimum state of consciousness.
