Phillip Scofield reduced Judy Finnigan to tears with 'awkward' off air comment

Judy Finnigan, one half of iconic TV duo Richard and Judy, was left in tears after Phillip Schofield accidentally upset her following an appearance on This Morning.

Phil appeared on the hit ITV show to talk about his roles in West End hits Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Doctor Dolittle.

He was booked to appear on the show as the first guest in This Morning’s new London based studio after it had moved from Liverpool.

This Morning was broadcast live from Albert Dock in Liverpool from 1988 until 1996.

Writing in his new book Phillip Schofield: Life’s What You Make It, Phil said: “I accidentally made Judy cry.

“I knew that it had been a wrench for them to move from the North West and at the end of the interview I asked how they were settling into their hew studio.

“Judy burst into tears. Slightly awkward.”

Richard and Judy left This Morning in 2001 before launching their own show on Channel 4.

Phil joined the show in 2002 alongside Fern Britton.

Seven years later Holly Willoughby replaced Fern to form the hit presenting double act of Holly and Phil currently on screens today.

Shortly after coming out as gay live on TV in February this year, Phil confirmed he would write his autobiography.

While he hadn’t planned on a book at the time he came out, he says lockdown gave him chance to put pen to paper after putting it off for so long.

Speaking in a video posted to social media, Phil said: “I have something to tell you which I am very, very excited about.

“I have finally, after being asked for many years, written my book.

“I wrote the first line when I was 14 and I knew exactly how I wanted it to start, should I ever write it, and it is in fact now the first line.

“In 2017, I wrote the first few chapters and sent it a few friends and they were like, ‘Oh my god, you have to write this’, and I knew I couldn’t and you knew why.”

The TV veteran continued: “And then my life changed and lockdown happened and I had a shed load of time on my hands. I thought, ‘Well, you’ve thought about it for long enough, you’ve written all these notes, why don’t you do it?’ and so I did. I wrote and I wrote and I loved it.”
