Alex Beresford 'takes Piers' GMB seat' as Kate Garraway talks 'tumultuous time'

Good Morning Britain viewers left divided on Friday morning as Alex Beresford hosted the ITV breakfast show for the first time since Piers Morgan quit.

Weather presenter Alex, 40, joined Kate Garraway, 53, on the show and sat in the seat which once belonged to Piers, 55.

Welcoming Alex back to the presenting team, Kate said: “And you’ve had tumultuous times, haven’t you? It’s lovely to have you here.”

“It’s good to be back,” the metrologist replied.

Alex took a short break from presenting on the show after his clash with Piers earlier this month, returning as the resident weatherman last week.

Good Morning Britain’s Alex Beresford said it’s “good to be back” as he returned to the presenting panel on the ITV breakfast show following Piers Morgan’s shock exit earlier this month

Viewers watching at home rushed to their keyboards as Alex returned to host the show.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “Is it just me that feels particularly annoyed that Alex Beresford is now sitting in Piers Morgan’s seat? Method in the madness? Not amused!”

Another added: “Alex Beresford sitting in Piers Morgan’s seat on GMB is giving me life.”

A third person posted: “Ouch! Alex has taken Piers’ seat on GMB. Final nail etc!”

While a fourth social media user said: “Alex Beresford is a great presenter… what a natural.”

However others noted that Alex was actually in Ben Shephard’s seat, as Piers rarely ever hosted the show on a Friday.

Piers, 55, stormed off GMB after becoming embroiled in a heated debate with Alex over his comments about the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle following her two hour tell all with Oprah Winfrey.

The former newspaper editor Piers said he didn’t believe a word the former Suits actress said, adding he wanted more context on the alleged racist comment made about her then unborn baby’s skin.

Meanwhile, Alex strongly argued that her comments should never be downplayed – especially those around race.

Piers’ comments lead to a record 57,000 Ofcom complaints, including one from Meghan Markle herself.

Fans were left divided as Alex joined Kate Garraway to present Friday’s show

After being dragged into a meeting with ITV bosses, Piers was asked to make a live TV apology.

He refused and quit the show arguing he was fighting for free speech.

In a statement posted to Twitter last Thursday around 48 hours after Piers walked from GMB, Alex said: “There is so much that could be said. Piers’ departure sincerely wasn’t the conclusion I was hoping for.

“Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheeky on-air relationship.

“We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday morning, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.

“I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It’s sad that we weren’t able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree.

“I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.

“Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He’s given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful. I wish him well!”
