BBC Breakfast viewers baffled as they're told to eat pigs to help survival rates

BBC Breakfast viewers were left rather confused on Thursday morning after they were given information on how to prevent a decline in pigs across the UK.

Several viewers took to Twitter to air their concerns as many thought it was unusual to suggest that people should eat pigs in order to preserve them.

Journalist Fiona Lamdin was at a farm on Thursday morning.

She interviewed an events and account manager named Chris who spoke about the rarity of the pigs and how worried he is about their survival.

Chris said: “Well these pigs are Oxford Sandy and Blacks – any we are worried about these pigs like we are any breeds.

Fiona Lamdin was sent to a farm to discuss how to help pig’s survival rates

“The important thing is to remember that they were bred to meet human needs as like all livestock… so if you are thinking about food, well do think about eating later breed meat.”

Fiona responded to this and told Chris that viewers watching may be rather upset by this new insight and asked him whether people needed to “eat them in order to protect them”.

However, Chris was certain that this was the best way to help the pigs’ survival rates across the country and assured viewers that the pigs were there for human consumption.

Chris explained: “Yes these animals exist to meet human needs and the more we can do to recognise that and live on those needs, the better.”

Viewers were surprised that they were informed to eat more pigs in order to save them

Viewers were left confused by this and took to Twitter to share their concerns, one viewer said: “‘To protect rare breed pigs we need to keep eating them’ BBC Breakfast, you need to have a word with yourself.”

Another confused viewer commented: “Protect the pigs! Eat them. Weird logic.”

A third viewer wrote: “So basically this mornings pig story was all about eating British pork ffs.”

While another commented: “Let’s protect the pigs by eating them. What??”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One
