BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay cuts off Dominic Raab as they clash over Peppa Pig speech

BBC Breakfast host Jon Kay blasted Boris Johnson for his “bizarre” speech where he talked about going to Peppa Pig World.

The BBC presenter slammed Boris in front of his Conservative Party colleague Dominic Raab, who is the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.

Wednesday’s broadcast saw Jon join Sally Nugent on the famous red sofa, and they invited Dominic Raab on to chat about the latest events in Westminster (November 24).

However, the pair clashed when Jon grilled Dominic about recent Boris’ speech to the CBI annual conference – where he spoke about his recent trip to Peppa Pig World and compared himself to Moses.

At one point, Boris lost track of his speech, which led to a long pause where he told the audience of business leaders “forgive me”.

Jon said: “This is the first time we’ve spoken to one of the cabinet since that rather bizarre speech by the prime minister a couple of days ago.

“All those long silences and references to Peppa Pig. What did you make of it?”

Dominic seemed to avoid the question and answered: “The Prime Minister is on great form. The reality is, people talk about speeches in the Westminster village and gossip and all the rest of it.

“We’re coming out of the pandemic, if we’d have listened to the Labour Party we’d be stuck in lockdown.

“As a result of the decisions the Prime Minister has taken, economic growth is up, jobs are up, wages are up…”

Jon wasn’t having it any of it though, and he proceeded to cut Dominic off on air as the politican was still talking.

Jon said: “We’ve covered all those things in greet depth, but you know, as well as the smiles about Peppa Pig, there are serious concerns at the highest level within Downing Street about whether the Prime Minister has a grip on it.”

Jon added that the speech highlighted for many that there is a “much bigger issue” about the way Boris does his job.

Raab shook his head and said: “I don’t agree” before claiming that it’s the job of Westminster commentators to criticise the government.

On Peppa Pig, he said: “It is a fantastic British export around the world, and I think that was the point the prime Minister is making.”

He explained that the govnerment are focused on “building back better” and the “job at hand” after the pandemic.

Jon Kay put it to Dominic that if senior politicians like Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, had done the speech, Dominic and the government wouldn’t be “brushing it aside” – instead, they would be saying ‘this person is not fit to do politics”.
