Beatles fans baffled by 'woke' smoking warning ahead of Disney+ Get Back documentary

Fans of The Beatles have been left baffled by a rather bizarre warning airing ahead of the new Disney+ docuseries The Beatles: Get Back.

Those tuning into the trio of episodes shown on the streaming service were met with a warning that the show contains “explicit language, mature themes and smoking”.

Disney+ has always been a family-oriented platform, offering everything from classic cartoons to live musicals – and has never before featured swearing.

However, some fans dismissed it as “woke” – and were baffled by its inclusion in the new show, which takes audiences back to The Beatles’ preparations to release their 1970 album Let It Be.

Tweeting in reaction to the warning, one fan fumed: “I liked the warning on Get Back… SMOKING. On that basis, Casablanca should be cancelled!”

Another ranted: “Watching the Beatles doc #GetBack, there is actually a trigger warning at the beginning: ‘This footage contains explicit language, mature themes and smoking.’ Seriously?”

“@thebeatles Get Back was worth the wait. I’m into episode two part way because of time constraints,” another explained. “But I have to chuckle at the disclaimer about people smoking. Who the hell needs that warning? How fragile is society? It’s a goddamn cigarette. Get over it.”

Get Back does, however, signify the first time in history that a Disney service has agreed to broadcast expletives, with creator Peter Jackson petitioning the company to let him air foul language in the series.

Speaking to Radio Times, Jackson described the series as “a film about chain smokers with guitars who play songs”.

He explained: “We’ve had to have a discussion with Disney about the swearing.

“The Beatles are Scouse boys and they freely swear but not in an aggressive or sexual way. We got Disney to agree to have swearing, which I think is the first time for a Disney channel.”

Jackson added: “That makes them feel modern, too. Obviously people did swear in the 60s but not when they were being filmed.”

However, it appears the king of cancel culture callouts, Piers Morgan, didn’t find fault with the documentary.

Posting a snap of the promo picture to his Instagram Stories, Piers praised the series, writing: “Just finished Get Back – wow! The best music documentary I’ve ever watched… riveting, fascinating and utterly compelling.

“The best band of all time as you’ve never seen them but always hoped they were.

“Four slightly dysfunctional mates bickering, bantering and making magical music. Loved every second.”
