Benedict Cumberbatch left devastated after 'gifted' sister dies from 7-year cancer fight

Benedict Cumberbatch’s sister Tracy Peacock has died after a seven-year battle with cancer.

The Sherlock star, 45, revealed his devastating news for the first time that his elder sister who he described as “brilliant” had died of the “horrible” illness.

Tracy was 62-years-old and the public did not know the artist, better known as “Tracks” had been ill or passed away.

The actor who is starring in the new Hollywood Blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, paid tribute to his “gifted” and “different” sister.

He said: “She died of cancer.

“She’d been battling it for seven years.”

“As the greatly awful Donald Rumsfeld said, “stuff happens”. It’s horrible.”

Tracey leaves behind a husband and a 34-year-old daughter Emily.

Cumberbatch continued: “She was nothing to do with this world. She was markedly different. She was a brilliant fine artist but ended up doing a lot of restorative work on canvas and on frames and carpentry.

“But still kept her hand in and did her own work and made the most Christmas and celebratory cards of any kind of festival. She was very gifted.”

Tracey was the daughter of Cumberbatch’s mother, Wanda Ventham who was an actress.

The 62-year-old was born during Wanda’s first marriage to James Tabernacle.

When Tracey was a teenager, Wanda married Cumberbatch’s father Timothy Carlton and stayed with her mother, and grew up with Benedict.

The actor was often looked after by his older sister as a child and he recalled her leaving him on a freezing rooftop after trying to calm him down.

He recalled: “She forgot about me.

“I mean, it was funny. She was in the kitchen with her friends and she suddenly saw the snow falling through the window.”

The Harrow-educated actor shares three young children with his theatre director wife Sophie Hunter.
