Coronation Street's Rovers Return to be sold after Johnny and Jenny split twist

Things have been rocky for a while between Coronation Street’s Johnny and Jenny Connor.

With Johnny (Richard Hawley) currently behind bars, he’s threatened to leave Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) – for ‘her own good’ – more than once as he struggled with his MS and the guilt of his historic armed robbery.

But their relationship could be over for good as Johnny is granted early release and makes a surprise return to the Street.

Johnny’s happiness to be home won’t last long, though, as he discovers Jenny has slept with Ronnie Bailey, who has been staying as a B&B guest in the pub.

Reeling from the betrayal, Johnny puts the pub on the market with the wholehearted intention of flogging it to the highest bidder.

In pictures published by The Sun, a red-faced Jenny can be seen standing outside the pub, explaining to her bar staff Shaun Tully (Antony Cotton) and Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell) why the pub is up for sale.

It hasn’t yet been revealed who will purchase the Rovers – but it’s certainly no stranger to exchanging hands, having recently been owned by Peter Barlow and Carla Connor, as well as Steve McDonald and his mum Liz, a staple behind the bar.

The set features a real Purplebricks ‘For Sale’ board in the latest bit of product placement on the cobbles, having recently added Co-Op and Costa to its roster.

Corrie producer Ian MacLeod told the paper: “The upcoming story around the sale of the Rovers Return stems from something exciting that happens between Jenny and Johnny – but it also led to an exciting opportunity to team up with Purplebricks to sell the nation’s most iconic pub.

“The presence of a real Purplebricks sign outside adds a little bit of extra realism to a really relatable story.”

Company Chief Marketing Officer Ben Carter added: “We look forward to getting [the pub] ‘sold’ like we do for thousands of homes across the country every year.”

But fans are divided about the sale on social media.

One devastated Corrie viewer wrote: “Just read that Johnny is selling the Rovers! There had better not be plans to remove Jenny as landlady – Jenny is a brilliant, iconic landlady!!!”

Others predict either Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) or the recently reappeared Sharon Bentley (Tracie Bennett) will take up the reins as landlord – and either would definitely send shockwaves around the street.
