Corrie star hints Ed and Aggie will stay together despite Ronnie affair scandal

Ed Bailey has seen his marriage hit by a meteor – his wife Aggie slept with his brother Ronnie over three decades ago, bringing his son’s paternity into question.

This fraught storyline will be at the core of Coronation Street in the weeks to come, as Ed and Aggie (Lorna Laidlaw) face up to the lies within their relationship.

After learning the truth of her long-ago fling with his suave brother Ronnie (Vinta Morgan), Ed has a decision on his hands, as he debates whether he can hold his family together.

Ahead of the tense scenes, actor Trevor Michael Georges, who joined the cast of Coronation Street in 2019, discussed whether Ed and Aggie’s relationship will survive the heartbreak.

While skeletons will emerge from Aggie’s closet, Ed will likely resolve to stand by her, Trevor revealed, accepting his own wrongs as a husband.

The soap star explained Ed’s past gambling addiction was enough to drive Aggie to leave him, but she stuck by his side against the odds.

He said: “I think Ed’s logical enough to work out that just the timeline of what happens means that nobody’s actually guilty of anything up to the point that the wife that he’s been living with for the past 30 years has kept quiet about it.

“And that’s left him very, very confused. Again, unstable, off-balance.

“Their relationship is built on so much experience and mutual understanding that for him, he’s got no secrets left. But of course, that’s what counterbalances them. He had the gambling secret for long enough.”

His gambling debts meant the Bailey family were forced to abandon their previous home, moving to the cobbles two years ago for a fresh start in a downsized property.

As a result, Ed will likely remain committed to his wife, despite the secret she held close to her heart for the entirety of their marriage.

Referring to the fate of their romance, Trevor said: “Ed’s smart enough to know not to shoot himself in the foot being a complete hypocrite, and [he] understands that everyone around him has had to tolerate things as well.

“His relative poverty is always going to be a reminder of that. He’s always going to temper his responses to anything that’s thrown at him even if it is something as extreme as a sense of betrayal because he knows he’s no angel.

“It’s up to anybody from anybody’s perspective who’s done worse to who. Generally at the end, it all kind of balances out.”

The actor, who appeared in the likes of Casualty and EastEnders before joining the cast of rival soap Coronation Street, also discussed Ed’s changing relationship with his son Michae (Ryan Russell)l.

Michael questions the true identity of his father, and his sense of doubt leaves Ed – who has raised him throughout his entire life – devastated.

Trevor said: “I think in his heart he knows that Michael is absolutely his son. Probably what’s hurt him more than everything else is everyone else questioning it. That’s a little heartbreaking.

“He has to point out things to Michael which he thinks is obvious, which is, ‘I’m the one that’s always been there. You’ve used the word dad, it’s the first word you ever used’.

“It’s that sense of betrayal that actually cuts deeper.”
