Craziest celebrity home remedies – from blood-suckers to olive oil face wash

Comedian Alan Carr has revealed his unusual treatment for avoiding mosquito bites… drinking a lot of gin and tonic.

According to Alan, the beverage raises levels of the chemical quinine – which the bugs don’t like – in the blood.

But he says his madcap home remedy doesn’t work as “I drink so much gin and they still bite me.”

Sorry Alan, quinine is only present in the tonic water – and then not in a high enough quantity to ward off mosquitoes.

But he’s not the only famous face to have a wacky health remedy, as Daily Star discovers.

From leeches to special toothpaste, it seems Hollywood ‘s biggest names will try anything…

Demi Moore

The actress is fan of leech therapy to detoxify her blood and “optimise health”.

In 2008, the 58-year-old revealed she started using the bloodsuckers when she was in Austria having a cleanse.

“These aren’t just swamp leeches though, these are highly trained medical leeches. These are not just some low level scavengers; we’re talking high level blood suckers,” she said on US television.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Most of us are content with using toothpaste on our gnashers, but Catherine claims she prefers strawberries to brush her teeth.

In a magazine interview, she revealed she uses one to three puréed strawberries mixed with half a tablespoon of baking soda to keep her teeth pearly white.

The fruit contains malic acid, which is believed to be a whitening agent.

Halle Berry

The star was ahead of the beauty trend for coffee body scrubs when she told how she rubs coffee beans on herself to banish cellulite.

She said she mixes the sediment from cups of coffee with a teaspoon of oil and honey before putting it on her affected areas.

Some experts say the caffeine in coffee can help dilate blood vessels and reduce the appearance of skin dimples.

Chloë Grace Moretz

Actress Chloë has often spoken out about her battle with acne, and washes her face with olive oil to help keep it at bay.

She said: “I swear my skin is so much clearer because of it.”

Some soaps and face cleansers contain olive oil, as it’s thought it can help kill off spot-causing bacteria.

The Bad Neighbours star also had some help from a healthy diet and Accutane.

Gwyneth Paltrow

The founder of Goop, Gwynnie is known for madcap health treatments, from steaming her vagina to drinking water from a crystal-infused bottle.

But one of the strangest was when she claimed to get purposefully stung by bees to boost her health.

Called “apitherapy”, fans of the practice say it treats a wide range of conditions from arthritis to multiple sclerosis.

During the singer’s controversial 1994 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, she claimed she urinated on her own feet in order to ward off athlete’s foot.

“Urine is an antiseptic… it’s all got to do with the enzymes in your body,” she said.

In 2018, she posted a video of her drinking a yellow liquid from a cup following an ice bath, and claimed it was urine.

Josh Brolin

The American actor confessed to a very unusual health tip – “perineum sunning”.

The bizarre treatment involves exposing your backside’s intimate area to the sun to give yourself a big vitamin D boost.

But it didn’t go well for Josh who posted on Instagram that the area was “crazy burned”.

The Avengers star said: “I don’t know who the f*** thought of this stupid s*** but f*** you nonetheless.”
