Dan Walker reveals secret trick Nadiya Bychkova used to help him succeed on Strictly

BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker has revealed that Nadiya Bychkova used “golfing analogies” to teach him dances on Strictly.

The BBC presenter reunited with his professional dance partner Nadiya on Tuesday’s Breakfast (December 7) after they became the latest pair to leave the ballroom on Sunday.

Dan and Nadiya made it to the quarter-finals, but were knocked out of the competition after losing the dance off to TV presenter AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington.

When Nadiya appeared on the red sofa to talk about her Strictly journey with Dan, the dancing couple gave viewers an insight into their training tactics, which clearly worked a treat considering how far they got in the show.

Dan is known for being an avid golfer, and apparently Nadiya took this on board during rehearsals in a bid to improve his footwork.

Dan said: “She said you’ve got two friends, me and the floor, and I sort of understood because I like golf and play golf.

“You react to the floor quite a bit in golf, so we used quite a few golfing analogies to make sure that my feet worked in the right way, and pushing away when you try to get your steps going.

“So that’s what she did.”

Speaking about her former Strictly student, Nadiya admitted that she didn’t know who Dan was before meeting him through the show.

Dan’s co-star Sally Nugent also asked her what it was like training someone who didn’t have any prior dancing skills.

Nadiya replied: “It was beautiful, because it was him. Very helpful that he’s very clever. He just understood everything I was telling him.

“I think from all the other sports [that he does] he just understood the mechanics.”

Dan and Nadiya scored 31 points out of 40 from the judges when they danced their Tango routine, but it wasn’t enough to save them from the boot on Sunday.

Discussing his exit earlier this week, Dan said: “I’m not sad that it’s over. I’ll miss not going training with Nadiya today and learning a new dance and getting ready for the semi-final beacuse that’s been the rhythm of my week for the last three months, bizarrely.

“But I’m just happy that it happened in the first place, so that’s the way I’m looking at it.”
