EastEnders fans react to new Liam Butcher as Alfie Deegan takes on iconic role

EastEnders fans were in for a treat on Friday night as they saw the return of one the cheekiest chaps in town return to Albert Square with a whole new face.

Viewers of the hit BBC One soap saw Liam Butcher back in Watford once again after the son of Sid Owen and Bianca Jackson formally left the long-standing show in back in 2015.

Now six years later, actor Alfie Deegan has stepped into the iconic role as he attempts to replace previous actor James Forde who was a fan favourite on the show and portrayed Liam from 2008 to 2015.

And the cheeky chap certainly came in with a bang as he surprised his adopted sister Whitney Dean and Tiffany Butcher at Ruby’s club after he treated them to a bottle of champagne.

Liam first left the square to live in Germany with his girlfriend Cindy Williams and dad Ricky but made the two-hour flight back to Watford to support Tiff after she ended her marriage to Keegan Baker.

But it appears as though Liam’s intentions aren’t entirely pure as it slowly became clear that her brother has returned to Albert Square to make some extra money working as a mechanic at the Arches.

It is thought that Liam will only be on the scene for a short stint so fans can expect fireworks to go off around the fiery redhead.

And it appears as though the star has been a huge hit with the fans online as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the new actor.

One fan penned: “New Liam seems like a good bit of casting. He has Ricky’s mannerisms #EastEnders.”

Another chimed in with: “Great to see Liam Butcher back in #EastEnders but bit of a shock to see a new face. Hope he’s sticking around though, I do miss that family.”

A third added: “Oh hello! New Liam” with a fire emoji while another said: “The new ‘Liam’ is a bit of alright!”

But some fans still miss the former fiery redhead who was played by James Forde

But not everyone is happy to see the return of Liam Butcher as others prefer the old Liam and noted that Alfie Deegan has some big shoes to fill in this role.

One viewer wrote: “NO NO NO NO! This new Liam is a joke! Thinks he’s some kind of big man! One of the worst head changes in #Eastenders ever!”

Another added: “Not keen on the new Liam so far. I want to give him time though could warm to him. #EastEnders.”

A third agreed: “Not sure about this new Liam butcher. They have changed his character so much… he was a timid lad now he’s come back gangster… nah too much #EastEnders.”
