Girl Amy Winehouse wanted to adopt says 'I could have saved her from demons'

The little girl Amy Winehouse wished to adopt before she tragically passed away has spoken out about the iconic singer – and says she could have saved her.

Dannika Augustin has opened up about her sweet relationship with the legendary Back to Black singer during an exclusive interview with the Sunday Mirror – and she revealed she still thinks about Amy every day.

Dannika, who is now 20 years old and a mum-of-one herself, recalled how Amy used to beam with joy, and that her drink and drugs demons faded away when they spent time together.

It came after the pair formed a beautiful mother-daughter-like bond in sunny St. Lucia during the last year of Amy’s life, and apparently the Grammy-winning songstress had been planning to bring Dannika over to London before she passed.

Marking the 10th anniversary of her death, Dannika said: “Amy was like a mother to me and we had so much fun together.

“When she came to St Lucia, I would be with her every day. We would go horse-riding or sit by the pool at her villa. We would play games and laugh and do funny stuff.”

During the Dannika continued that Amy would sing or play music and she would dance next to her, and that Amy would hug her and even call her a ‘daughter’ – always telling her how adorable she was.

Heartbroken Dannika also shared that she knew she had a big impact on Amy’s life because she was always clean when they were together and never upset.

She went on: “She was never drunk or taking drugs because she wanted to be responsible and she was such a kind-hearted person.

“I am convinced that if I had moved to London, I would have been able to save her.”

Tragically, Amy passed away from alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011 at the young age of 27.

The star had booked a flight to visit young Dannika and had reportedly even hired lawyers to look into the adoption process just days before she passed.

Amy had taken the schoolgirl under her wing when Dannika was living with her single mum who was struggling financially.

The pair met for the first time in 2010 when the singer became a regular customer at the beach bar run by her gradnmother – Marjorie Lambert – on Cas en Bas beach.

Brunette Amy spent a large proportion of the last three years of her life in St Lucia, where she shacked up in a lavish £2,000-a-night villa at the Cotton Bay Resort.

Dannika believes she was nine years old when she met Amy, who told her how pretty she was, and that she didn’t know Amy was a celebrity at first.

Dannika, who last saw Amy in November 2010, admitted that she still thinks about her all the time and plays her music, and that she would love to see her again now and tell her about everything she’s been doing over the last decade.

The mum, who is now engaged and has a son aged 18 months, now works as a chef after graduating from school and dreams of becoming an accountant.

She also added that she loves being a mum, and that she believes Amy would have made a great mum too as she had a mothering instinct just like she does.

It comes amid a brand new BBC Two documentary called Reclaiming Amy – an intimate telling of Amy’s life led by her friends and family which marks the 10 year anniversary of Amy’s passing.

Led by Amy’s mother Janis and her dad Mitch, the aim of the film is to reveal the truth about the British music icon and ‘reclaim’ Amy’s incredible story.
