Gladiators Wolf claims police 'let him off' with speeding ticket as he was a fan

Gladiators star Wolf was let off a speeding ticket when the police officer who pulled him over turned out to be a fan.

The lucky escape came when Wolf – real name Michael Van Wijk – was driving over the speed limit in New Zealand and got spotted by a police car who proceeded to follow him with their blue lights on.

Wolf, 69, pulled over and was approached by the Police Officer – who was ready to give him a ticket for doing 48mph in a 40mph zone.

However, the officer in question turned out to be English – and a huge fan of the Gladiators.

Talking exclusively to Daily Star Online he recalled: “One time… I shouldn’t say this in case there is any police watching but it’s quite funny. I was in a 40 zone and didn’t realise I was doing about 45 – 48.

“I saw the flashing lights behind me and thought ‘oh here we go what have I done.’ I got pulled up. This was in New Zealand.

“He was very surly, the guy he said ‘you were doing 48 in a 40,’ I said ‘I’m ever so sorry I didn’t realise,’ I’m very polite.

“Then, he had an English accent, and all of a sudden he went ‘are you?’ I said ‘yes,’ and he goes ‘oh my god can I have a picture with you,’ I said ‘do I get a ticket still,’ he went ‘oh of course not.’ I thought ‘oh happy days.'”

Wolf then described how he ended up chatting to the officer’s wife as they hung out by the side of the road.

He continued: “He said ‘my wife is a huge fan’. I said ‘get your wife on the phone I’ll talk to her’. He said ‘would you do that?’ So I got his wife on the phone. I was talking to his wife side of the road when he should have been writing me out a ticket.

“It’s their discretion but he was nice enough to let me off with a warning.”

And Wolf admitted that he still gets recognised now – despite no longer having his trademark long curly hair.

He explained: “Yes, I do. I’m surprised I do with all the hair gone and now that I’m 69. I’m 70 next year. If I’m running on the beach or something like that people will suddenly look at you and then look at you again when you’re on your way back down. Because they recognise you. Especially if they’re English.”
