GMB fans rage as Abi Roberts calls Britain 'UK SSR' over vaccine passport idea

Good Morning Britain guest Abi Roberts sparked fury during Monday’s show after she told Kate Garraway she doesn’t know anyone with Covid, as she hit out at the vaccine passport idea.

The comedian, who is good friends with controversial actor Laurence Fox, appeared on the hit ITV show to slam ideas of a vaccine passport and hit out at a universal rollout of the Covid vaccine.

Despite having the antibodies for Covid-19 herself, Abi told Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek Draper has been in hospital with long Covid since March 2020, that she has spoken to lots of people and doesn’t know any who have had Covid.

Since the start of the pandemic over 4 million have contracted the virus in the UK with over 120,000 deaths.

Abi said: “I didn’t realise I had woken up in the UK SSR in the communist conservative party run by Boris Johnson.

“I have lived in a totalitarian regime, I lived in the Soviet Union in the 80s.

“It is all reminiscent of the time when you would hear people say ‘papers please’.

“I do not want to live in a totalitarian police state. It is a slippery slope.”

Shocked by the comparison, Kate replied: “But in Russia was it in response specifically to a deadly and as of yet incurable virus or was it just a flash back to memories of things that were sinister?”

Abi’s comments left viewers raged.

One viewer hit out: “The whole ‘I haven’t seen anyone affected by Covid’ argument a year on is such a rubbish argument #GMB #goodmorningbritain.”

Another added: “So offensive Ofcom needs to look into this woman’s views. Vile. #GMB”

A third chimed in: “She doesn’t know anyone who’s had Covid doesn’t know anyone who’s died of Covid where’s she living, in an abandoned nuclear shelter. Transport her to an abandoned Scottish island she’ll be happy there.”

A fourth mocked: “Generous of #GMB giving Abi Roberts airtime to ruin whatever career she has.”

Meanwhile another gave their own personal insight replying: “I’m sure my best friend will be thrilled by your moaning.

“She lost her mum and dad to Covid, within 9 days at Christmas.

“Her life has been ripped to shreds. I’m sure she’ll be thrilled just because you haven’t been affected by it.”

Last week Daily Star revealed how the 2021 BRIT Awards are set to use the government’s vaccine passport scheme to get a live audience in the O2 Arena during next month’s ceremony.

The vaccine passport would work as an update to the track and trace NHS app – allowing the user to have their Covid status on their devices.

A source told Daily Star: “BRITs bosses are determined to have as many people at the awards as possible but safety has to come first.

“They are pushing for a live audience and want to be seen as the first big event to take place.

“Talks with the government have been taking place for weeks about using their controversial vaccine passport app.”

In a statement to Daily Star, the BRITs said: “We are exploring options with Government about whether some audience attendance at this year’s BRIT Awards is possible.

“We hope this year’s show can be part of the pilot scheme, but some practical considerations still have to be addressed with Government and we are not yet in a position to make a final decision.”
