GMB's Alex Beresford has quit social media after facing 'relentless racism'

Weatherman Alex Beresford has revealed that he became a victim of “relentless racism” online after his furious Good Morning Britain spat with Piers Morgan, prompting him to quit social media.

The 40-year-old meteorologist shared very differing views to the Life Stories presenter when it came to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s tell-all Oprah Winfrey interview.

Both Alex and Piers were keen to be heard as they aired their opposing opinions that eventually saw the main news reader fume as he stormed off set.

As a result of the GMB feud, Alex has now suffered “racial abuse” online which left him with no choice but to leave Twitter and Facebook.

In a segment that he had written for The Telegraph, he said: “I haven’t announced it (like the former Arsenal player Thierry Henry did this week when he publicly quit social media, in response to anonymous racist bullying) but I have been forced to step away from Twitter and Facebook myself, because it was getting too much.

“I am a strong person, but I am not made of steel.”

The TV star also explained that the on-going racial internet bullying seemed to be deemed as the norm in Britain at the moment.

He warned: “The harsh reality, though, is that social media is just a reflection of a bigger problem in society.

“These people are your co-workers, they are even a parent at the school gate.”

Alex became a victim after he’d gone head-to-head with Piers Morgan on the ITV daytime favourite.

After watching the Duke and Duchess of Sussex interview with US talkshow host Oprah, Piers told viewers that he didn’t believe Meghan.

This sparked fury and lead to thousands of Ofcom complaints due to Meghan raising serious claims such as race and mental health.

The weather man also became angered and wasted no time at all with barking back at Piers on the show.

Soon after Alex took aim, an angry Piers told him: “Sorry, see you later. I can’t do this,” and stormed away from the cameras.

It seems the damage between the pair still hasn’t been repaired as Piers claimed Alex had snubbed him after he’d handed in his notice.

Writing for the Mail on Sunday, he penned: “I’ve had nice messages from all the other GMB presenters, apart from Alex Beresford.”
