Goldbergs actor George Segal has passed away at the age of 87

Goldbergs actor and Oscar nominee George Segal has passed away this morning at the age of 87 due to “complications from bypass surgery”.

George’s wife Sonia broke the news today in as statement, saying: “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.”

Fans will recognise him as Albert “Pops” Solomon on all eight seasons of ABC sitcom The Goldbergs.

The show is expected to air a tribute episode to the actor.

He also famously starred opposite Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in 1967’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

George passed away at the age of 87 today

George is also well known for starring as Jack Gallo on NBC’s Just Shoot Me, which earned him two Golden Globe nominations, as well as turns in Bye Bye Braverman, Blume in Love, California Split and Look Who’s Talking.

He enjoyed playing the ukulele and the banjo, and even made an album with his band The Imperial Jazz Band.

His longterm manager Abe Hoch said: “I am saddened by the fact that my close friend and client of many years has passed away. I will miss his warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship. He was a wonderful human.”

Fans flooded Twitter to show their condolences and remember the actor.

One fan wrote: “This tribute episode for Pops on the Goldbergs is gonna hurt like a b****. Rest In Peace George Segal , you were truly a legend, and Pops will always be my favorite character on the Goldberg’s, he was so hilarious and witty. Fly high George”

George is best known currently for starring in the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs

“I didn’t have a great relationship with any of my grandparents, so I have a very very very strong attachment to TV and movie grandparents. That being said, I’m very sad about George Segal’s passing. Thank you @TheGoldbergsABC for giving me a Pops,” said another.

A third penned: “George Segal was one of those forever actors who was in everything and no one can name a bad role or forgettable performance. He was great because he did the work and always delivered.”

George is survived by his wife Sonia and his daughters Polly and Elizabeth, whom he had with his first wife, the late Marion Segal.
