Halyna Hutchins dead: Tributes pour in for Rust cinematographer who died from prop gun

Tributes have come pouring in for Halyna Hutchins, the Rust cinematographer who died after being shot with a prop gun by Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin.

Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood was among those paying tribute, as he said: “Absolutely horrifying and devastating news about cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. My heart goes out to her family.”

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn said: “My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets. I pray this will never happen.

“My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins and her family.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wrote on her final Instagram post: “I am so so sorry. Rest easy. My love and strength to your family.”

Producer James Cullen Bressack shared his heartache, as he commented: “I will miss you my friend…. This is devastating.”

Magic Mike actor Joe Manganiello also paid tribute to Halyna with a black-and-white snap of her and said: “I woke up to the messages and read the news and I am in shock. I was so lucky to have had @halynahutchins as my DP on Archenemy. She was an absolutely incredible talent and a great person.

“She had such an eye and a visual style, she was the kind of cinematographer that you wanted to see succeed because you wanted to she what she could pull off next… and she was a fantastic person.

“There was no amount of pressure she couldn’t handle. She was a great collaborator and an ally to anyone in front of her camera. Everyone who knew her was rooting for her.”

Joe also expressed his heartbreak over the nature of her death and the awful circumstances surrounding the accident.

He continued: “”I can’t believe that this could happen in this day and age… gunfire from a prop gun could kill a crew member? This is a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to her family and especially to her son. I am so sad today for everyone who knew her and worked with her…”

While not very common, it is not the first time someone has died on set by prop guns using blank cartridges.

On Oct. 12, 1984, actor Jon-Erik Hexum died from an accidental self-inflicted head injury caused by a blank on the set of the TV show Cover Up.

The son of screen legend Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, died after being shot with an improperly made blank round during the filming of The Crow on March 31, 1993.
