Inside Joel Corry's career from Geordie Shore extra to BRIT-nominated DJ

London lad Joel Corry celebrates his 32nd birthday today (June 10) and to mark the occasion, Daily Star is taking a look back at his career so far.

Now a chart-topping DJ, Joel first started making a name for himself in the early 2010s as a guest cast member on MTV series Geordie Shore.

From there he slowly started gaining traction as a DJ, releasing his own tracks from 2015.

However it wasn’t until more recently that he became someone to be taken real notice of, and this year he received three BRIT Award nominations.

As he celebrates his big birthday – in style, we’re sure – Daily Star is throwing it back to look at how Joel became one of the most prominent rising stars in the UK music scene.

Geordie Shore fame

Joel Corry dated Geordie Shore’s Sophie Kasaei between 2011 and 2017

Joel first started making small appearances on Geordie Shore in its second series in 2012, thanks to his relationship with cast member Sophie Kasaei.

The duo met in 2011 when Joel was working as an intern at MTV, the network on which Geordie Shore aired.

From then he made guest appearances on Geordie Shore, even travelling to Mexico and Australia to visit Sophie while the show was filming.

Flash-forward to 2017, though, and it was all over – with Joel reportedly dumping his Geordie lover over the phone.

She told new! magazine that Joel had dropped the break-up out of the blue, and blocked her number to try and make the split easier.

Sophie said shortly after the split: “I’m not heartbroken. We were always arguing about the house and stuff, deep down, maybe he’s done us a favour.”

Love Island record breaker

Joel started releasing a number of singles in 2015, however it wasn’t until his 2019 track Sorry that people really started to take notice.

The song, which was released in April of the same year, became the most Shazamed track in one day, with 41,000 searches, after it was featured on an episode of Love Island.

The dance anthem went on to peak at No6 in the UK charts, and was awarded platinum status in December of the same year, meaning it had sold 600,000 units.

He said at the time: “It feels amazing to break the UK record for the most Shazamed song ever in one day.

“My phone went into meltdown when it happened! It’s got everyone talking, and helped launch the single up the Official Charts. I’m just buzzing everyone is loving Sorry.”

Man of many talents

While Joel’s time on reality television and now in music are the things he’s best known for, the star has dabbled in other areas too.

The fitness fanatic – who has entered bodybuilding competitions – has his own personal training app.

On top of that, he previously ran the gym and leisurewear brand Most Rated after finding some popularity on Geordie Shore and through his local DJing.

Playing on his musical talents, Joel became a presenter on KISS FM and regularly uploads the mixes from his time slot online for fans to listen back on.

Slow rise to stardom

Although Joel made a name for himself with reality television, his early releases made little impact.

Last year he opened up about his rise to stardom, saying that his past antics on Geordie Shore – drunken nights out and on-screen romps – didn’t help.

He told the BBC: “There were some hurdles put up because of what I did back then – there’s a stigma in the music industry around that sort of thing.

“But I was willing to put the work in, and I mean really put the years and years in – working 24/7.”

Hitting the top spot

It’s clear that the extra work was worth it for Joel, whose 2020 smash hit Head & Heart, featuring MNEK, rose to the top of the UK charts.

The summer banger spent six weeks at No1, but 11 weeks in the Top 10 in total.

It also reached the top spot around the world, in the Netherlands, Ireland and Belgium, but cracked the Top 10 in countries such as Australia, Denmark, Germany and Italy.

Joel enjoyed a brief appearance on the US Billboard Hot 100 too.

His subsequent track, Bed, with Raye and David Guetta, peaked at No3 when it was released earlier this year.

Joel’s 2020 No1 single Head & Heart saw him achieve major recognition not only in the charts, as he was also nominated for three BRIT Awards this year.

He scooped up nominations for British Single, British Male Solo Artist and Breakthrough Artist.

The rising star failed to bag any of the trophies – losing out to Harry Styles, J Hus and Arlo Parks respectively.

However it was still a major deal for him, as he said: “I’ve been on cloud nine since I found out about these nominations, because I never thought that I would ever get nominated for a BRIT.”

He added: “I literally feel like I’ve already won just being nominated, so yeah, bring on tonight!”
