Inside Piers Morgan's fallout with Prince Harry and Meghan after Oprah chat

It’s no secret that Piers Morgan has fallen out with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after their tell-all Oprah interview in March this year.

The former Good Morning Britain host was furious at the royal couple after their explosive CBS interview, in which they opened up about their life as royals and made a number of serious allegations against the Royal Family.

And when an outspoken Piers began to take on-air swipes at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Good Morning Britain about their controversial Oprah chat, which was viewed by almost 50 million people worldwide on March 8, his scathing remarks dominated the headlines.

After the sit-down interview and Piers’ verbal lashes, tensions soon began to rise and the conflict is clearly still on-going, with Piers taking a dig at Prince Harry’s latest podcast interview where he compared his life to The Truman Show.

Harry and Meghan have also announced their new TV series with Oprah, called The Me You Can’t See, which is set to hit screens on May 21 – with Harry expected to open up about trauma and grief.

So with tensions still running high and plenty of Duke and Duchess developments in the news lately, The Daily Star have decided to look back on Piers’ feud with the couple.

Piers Morgan doesn’t believe Meghan’s mental health claims

Piers told GMB he thinks Meghan was lying about her mental health claims

After Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah on March 7, Piers was quick to attack the couple the next day on Good Morning Britain.

On the March 8 edition of the ITV breakfast show, Piers dismissed Meghan’s suicidal claims during the Oprah chat, saying “I don’t believe a word she says”.

Piers, who was once a friend of Meghan’s briefly before she met Harry and according to Piers then cut him off, told co-host Susanna Reid: “I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report”.

He also said: “The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our Royal Family I think is contemptible.”

And he also referred to the Duchess as the “Pinocchio Princess” in a tweet later that day.

His comments about her mental health claims sparked an immediate backlash from viewers, and broadcasting regulator Ofcom went on to receive a whopping 41, 000 complaints about the program.

On Good Morning Britain the next morning (March 9), tensions arose on air between Piers and his colleague Alex Beresford as the Harry and Meghan discussion raged on and seemed to reach a boiling point on set.

At first, Piers distanced himself from his previous comments, saying “if someone is feeling that way they should get the treatment and the help that they need every time. Every time.

“And if they belong to an institution like the royal family they should seek that help and be given it. It’s not for me to question if she felt suicidal; I am not in her mind and that is for her to say.”

But during the program, co-presenter Alex Beresford weighed in criticising Piers about his Meghan remarks, saying: “She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has but yet you continue to trash her.”

And then Piers briefly stormed off the set, saying “Okay, I’m done with this”.

Alex then reacted saying that Piers was being “pathetic”, replying: “This is diabolical behaviour”.

Shortly afterward, ITV announced that Morgan would be leaving Good Morning Britain effective immediately, after Ofcom announced that it would be investigating the March 8 episode of GMB.

An ITV spokesperson at the time said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Meghan issues formal ITV complaint at Piers

Piers broke Ofcom records with over 57, 000 complaints against him for his Meghan comments

Following Piers’ GMB exit, ITV News reported that Meghan herself had complained directly to ITV’s CEO – her complaint focusing on how his comments might affect those struggling with their own mental health, according to the PA new agency.

Clearly upset at Piers’ on-air comments about her, Meghan also complained to Ofcom about the morning show’s Monday episode.

Responding to the backlash, Piers then took to Twitter on March 10 saying, “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.”

He continued, writing: “I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.”

And a few days later, it was reported that complaints against Piers had broken Ofcom’s record – reaching 57, 000 – but a defiant Piers stood his ground, stating: “Only 57,000? I’ve had more people than that come up and congratulate me in the street for what I said. The vast majority of Britons are right behind me.”

Piers hits out at Meghan after leaving Good Morning Britain

Piers slammed Meghan over her claims to Oprah about son Archie

The following month, Piers made his first TV appearance since leaving GMB, when he spoke to Tucker Carlson on Fox (Monday 5 April), and he didn’t hold back from firing at Harry and Meghan again.

Slamming Oprah Winfrey as well as Harry and Meghan, Piers told the channel: “This wasn’t really an interview. This was her allowing two friends the platform to spray gun Britain, the monarchy, the royal family, the Queen, Prince William’s wife. You name it, they took them down.

“And that’s fine. That’s their decision. It’s their life, they can do what they want. But to do it when you’re still calling yourself Duke and Duchess of Sussex, I’m sorry, that is rank hypocrisy.”

The GMB star also questioned why Oprah had believed everything the Duke and Duchess said.

After watching a clip of Meghan telling Oprah that her son Archie was banned from being a Prince after raised questions over how ‘dark skinned’ he would be, a fuming Piers reacted: “I’m angry to the point of boiling over. I’m sickened by what I’ve just seen.”

Then in a following interview, Piers claimed that the Royal Family got in touch with him after the Oprah interview, sending him messaged of “gratitude” since.

Although he did not divulge which member or members of the Royal Family had allegedly given thanks, he told Extra’s Billy Bush: “I’m not going to go into who it was… but gratitude that somebody was standing up.”

And most recently, Piers has lashed out again at Prince Harry branding him a “spoiled brat” for “yapping” about his personal life and talking about his father, Prince Charles.

This comes after the Duke appeared on the Armchair Experts podcast with host Dax Shepard – where he opened up on growing up in the public eye.

The Duke claimed his life was like being in a “mix between The Truman Show and living in a zoo” referencing the Jim Carrey film where the main character’s life is broadcast to the whole world without him being aware of it.
