Inside Prince Harry's 'secret' proposal to Meghan Markle that was revealed years later

It’s been a busy year for the Windsor Family, with runaway royals Harry and Meghan at the centre of much of the excitement.

They married in May 2019, but the two are thought to have actually been secretly engaged long before the official story broke.

The couple originally said that that Harry popped the question while the pair were making a chicken tea in November 2017.

In an interview with the BBC in 2017 Meghan said they were enjoying a “standard typical night in”, describing it as “just a cosy night”.

She said they had been,”trying to roast a chicken and it just – just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.”

In the same interview Harry said: “She didn’t even let me finish, she said can I say yes, can I say yes and then were was hugs and I had the ring in my finger and I was like can I – can I give you the ring? She goes – oh yes the ring.”

But despite the official story, it is now known that the pair’s engagement actually went down a different way.

When did Meghan and Harry get engaged?

The Sun has reported the two actually got engaged two months before, when they were away on a trip to Botswana celebrating Meghan’s 36th birthday.

The choice of location, Botswana, had special importance to Harry who had travelled there shortly after his mother Princess Diana’s passing.

In the past he has said he feels “deeply connected to this place and to Africa”.

“Fifteen years I’ve been coming here. It’s a sense of escapism – a real sense of purpose.

“I have some of my closest friends here over the years.”

The details of the two’s early betrothal emerged from The Times’ biography on the Sussexes, Finding Freedom, which was published last year.

While the couple did not contribute to the book, they are said not to disagree with its contents.

The book also details many claims of the Sussexes over their treatment as well as the deterioration of their relationships with other members of the family.

It reveals how the Cambridges and Sussexes didn’t really speak to each other at Westminster Abbey’s Commonwealth service in March last year even though they hadn’t seen each other in months.

The book says: “Although Meghan tried to make eye contact with Kate, the duchess barely acknowledged her.”

It also reveals some heartwarming revelations about the couple, including that Harry was said to be “delightfully surprised by Meghan’s down-to-earth attitude.

“While camping she cleaned her face with baby wipes and happily wandered into the woodlands if she needed a bathroom break.”
