Jean-Marc Vallee dies aged 58 as tributes pour in for Big Little Lies director

The director of Big Little Lies and Dallas Buyers Club, Jean-Marc Vallee has died aged 58.

The Canadian writer, director, editor and producer won Emmy Awards for Big Little Lies, and was Oscar nominated for directing Dallas Buyers Club.

Deadline has reported that the star passed away “suddenly at his cabin outside Quebec City, and that his family and close advisors are in shock.”

The cause of death was not immediately known.

His producing partner for Dallas Buyers Club, Nathan Ross, said in a statement: “Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy.

“Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me.

“The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

Fans have also rushed to Twitter to share their thoughts on the sad news that broke on Boxing Day.

One wrote: “This is shocking. Out of NOWHERE. So very sorry to read this. He was developing quite the filmography, too. So sad. R.I.P. Jean-Marc Vallée”

Another said: “Devastating news! RIP Jean-Marc Vallee.”

“This is shocking and tragic. Very sorry to hear this wonderful Montreal director had passed away,” penned a third.

While another tweeted: “Even if you’ve never heard of Jean-Marc Vallee, you’ve almost certainly seen his TV directing work on Big Little Lies & Sharp Objects or his movies like Dallas Buyers Club & Wild. He had such a unique visual and narrative style. Such an immense talent gone too soon. RIP.”

Jean-Marc studied film at university after finding a love for the industry after making music videos and short films.

Since studying he has worked on some of the hardest hitting TV and film projects in recent years including working with Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.

Based on his own life, he directed the 2005’s acclaimed Quebec film “C.R.A.Z.Y.” followed by “The Young Victoria,” which earned three Academy Award nominations.

His other films included Cafe de Flore, “Los Locos,” a Western written by and starring Mario Van Peebles, “Loser Love” and “Demolition,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Following filming Dallas Buyers Club in 2013, Jean-Marc directed Wild starring Reese Witherspoon.

He continued to work with her on the HBO series Big Little Lies.

Jean-Marc leaves behind three siblings and two children.
