JLS' Aston Merrygold says performing with pop band calms his 'hyperactive' kids down

JLS singer Aston Merrygold has revealed that performing on stage is a “good calming technique” for his “hyperactive” kids.

The former X Factor star, 33, said that his kids look “gobsmacked” and “in awe” when they watch him sing and dance on stage with the pop band, and it seems to stop them from acting too hyper.

The dad-of-two spoke about his kids on Wednesday’s BBC Breakfast (November 24) when he appeared with his JLS bandmates – Marvin Humes, JB Gill and Oritsé Williams.

BBC presenter Jon Kay asked the band if their kids have been fully supportive of the band, adding that there’s a “risk” that they could be embarrassed by their pop star dads.

Aston replied: “They’re all very hyper-active children, mine especially, but they’re actually… it calms them down [watching JLS perform] and they’re so in awe that they’re just like completely gobsmacked, do you know what I mean?”

He then grinned as he quipped: “So it is actually quite a good calming technique.”

Later on, BBC host Sally Nugent said that it must be “emotional” for the band to see their kids watching them in the front row at their concert.

JB agreed and said: “Just looking at them as you said, in the front row and knowing that they’re supporting you, and for my son it was his first concert. My daughter – same thing.

“They’d never really seen us do what we do. They’ve watched videos back and seen the DVDs and some of the old stuff but yeah, obviously being up close and personal and having them there in the arena supporting us, getting a real taste of what we do. It’s been amazing.”

Aston welcomed his first baby, his son Grayson Jax, with his partner Sarah Lousie Richards in December 2017.

The pair welcomed their second son, Macaulay Shay last year in June.

JB has two children – a son called Ace Jeremiah and a daughter called Chaiara Sapphire.

JLS recently embarked on a reunion tour across the UK called the Beat Again Tour, which was originally planned last year but had to be rescheduled due to the pandemic.

The band have signed a new record deal with BMG to make new music, and the four-piece released their new single Eternal Love from the band’s fifth studio album – called 2.0 – in September.
