Kate Garraway confirms 'little positives' in Derek's recovery after moving home

Kate Garraway has given an important update on her husband Derek Draper’s ongoing battle with the effects of long Covid.

The Good Morning Britain host told Susanna Reid and Adil Ray how since moving home last month Derek has shown a string of ‘little positives’ in his condition.

However, keen not to get ahead of herself, the mum-of-two insisted there is still a long road to recovery.

Speaking during Thursday’s show, Kate, 53, said: “So far so good but I don’t want to tempt fate.

“It has been wonderful having Derek at home and there have been a lot of little positives I think.

“And whether they are because it is genuinely helping his cognition [being at home] or if it is because I am there to see the little things you know.”

Reflecting on the past 12 months, Kate continued: “I couldn’t go in to hospital before and were on FaceTime.

“It feels positive and there are these little moments of reaction.

“He said something when I walked in on the way to Smooth [Radio] the other day.

“He said I had a a new dress which was just amazing.”

Kate, who had managed to return to work part time at both GMB and Smooth as well as raising her two children and helping look after Derek went on to add: “I thought it was amazing actually that he recognised it and knew I needed flattery.

“And it was just a little moment and then there was nothing and we are back to the bits in-between.”

Before Derek moved home, Kate renovated their home to make it more suitable for him to live there.

“It is a very busy home now with lots of experts going in and out,” Kate said of the new situation.

“They are all an extraordinary bunch of people.

“We all know carers are incredible but for them it is learning about him and me. We not know the details.

“I thought I got it before [being a carer] but I do now.”

While Derek is now Covid free, the virus has wrecked havoc on his body.

During his time in hospital he was placed into a medically induced coma to help his body fight the virus.

Sadly he suffered organ failure as well as holes in his heart.

He is now on the long road to recovery, though it’s not thought he will make a return to full health.
