Kate Garraway hopes to take husband Derek Draper home to see his parents for Christmas

Kate Garraway has revealed she is hoping to take her husband Derek Draper home to his parents for Christmas after his lengthy Covid battle.

Derek, 54, spent more than a year in hospital battling coronavirus but he was released from hospital earlier this year and went home to Good Morning Britain star Kate and their two children.

He now needs round the clock care but Kate said she wants to get Derek back to Chorley to see his mum and dad this Christmas, even though it may be tricky.

She told Woman’s Own: “The dream would be to get Derek to Chorley [with the Drapers]. At the moment, moving him is a big problem: it’s exhausting for him.

“If not, maybe the Drapers could come to us for a big gathering, COVID permitting. And certainly I’ll be seeing the Garraways but my oven is broken so I’m not sure anyone wants to come to me.”

The presenter – who shares son Billy and daughter Darcey with Derek – said she knows this year will not be the same as other Christmases but that she’s just thrilled to have her husband home.

“Of course, he’s not going to be putting on his Santa costume, going out with Darcey for a father and daughter Christmas shop or the same with Billy,” she said.

“None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it’s adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he’s here at all, which we didn’t have at all last year and feared would never happen.”

Kate, 54, has been open about her husband’s long fight with the virus, updating fans on social media and sharing his battle in award-winning documentary Finding Derek.

She recently shared that Derek’s progress was still “painfully slow”.

Speaking on This Morning the presenter admitted she had been feeling lonely.

She said: “You just want just want to share with him the problems and you just want those little looks he would give you when the kids are doing something and because he can’t and you have to keep hoping he can, you are in a sort of weird, strange kind of vortex of almost bereavement, but grateful that he’s alive.

“It is a very strange feeling.”
