Kate Garraway reflects on Derek's last words to her as he was taken to hospital

Kate Garraway has opened up about the heartbreaking words Derek Draper said to her as he was taken away to hospital in March 2020.

The Good Morning Britain host, 53, and her husband have experienced a year from hell after Derek, 53, became seriously ill with coronavirus.

He’s now home from the hospital after being there for over a year as he battled the life-threatening virus.

In Kate’s new memoir The Power of Hope, which is being serialised in the Mail on Sunday, she revealed the moving words Derek said to her the day he was taken away in the ambulance.

She wrote in the article: “As they prepared to close the doors of the ambulance, Derek lifted the oxygen mask from his face.

“‘Kate,’ he said, ‘this is not the last time you will see me. It isn’t.’

“But I knew he would never have said that if at least a small part of him hadn’t been wondering if it was.”

Kate continued: “Derek’s texts from the hospital over the first hours were sporadic and confusing, keeping the worst of it from us. I didn’t know then that he wasn’t starting to get better.

“‘Can’t phone, but all good,’ read one. ‘Thank you for your lovely notes. Love you all, won’t be able to reply.'”

Kate and their two children, Darcey and William, couldn’t visit Derek in the hospital during the height of the pandemic.

Throughout the terrifying ordeal, the family has stayed strong and now Derek has returned home.

He’s been taken off all medical machines and breathing apparatus but has suffered long-term heart, lung, liver, pancreas and kidney damage as a result of having coronavirus.

Derek became the UK’s longest-serving Covid patient as he was hospitalised for over a year.
