Kate Garraway says pals paid her bills when she took time off work for Derek

Kate Garraway has revealed her friends paid her bills for her while her husband Derek Draper was in a coma amid his coronavirus battle.

The Good Morning Britain star, 53, took time off her presenting job last year after Derek was admitted to hospital, before undergoing treatment in intensive care.

After he was put in an induced coma, Kate stepped back from work to look after their two children as her husband fought the deadly virus.

Derek remains in the hospital recovering from the after-effects of Covid-19.

For the first few weeks, Kate didn’t report the news, understandably, but she soon returned to warn the public about her personal story.

Speaking to Sunday Times Magazine she recalled how it meant money stopped “coming in all of a sudden” and so her friends paid her bills.

Kate said: “Working in television, everybody does get paid a good wage compared with the nurses who are keeping Derek alive.

“But that obviously stopped quite suddenly last March.”

She told the publication how she didn’t want to go “pleading poverty,” as she knows they are better off than many.

Kate admitted she relied on her kind friends’ financial support to pay her bills while off work.

Navigating life without Derek, Kate has hired a nanny to help her as she continues her TV career.

Kate says she is in “continual survivor mode”.

The star said she gets through her hard days by just thinking about three things.

She said: “Just thinking, let’s get through today. Let’s check the children are sane and fed and happy. Let’s see what the latest is with Derek….

“I have tried to sort of wake up from that and think about the future. But nobody can tell you what the future is.”

Kate previously recalled how she has no right to access her and Derek’s joint bank account, credit cards, mobile phone plans or even remortgage their home, as the paperwork is all in her husband’s name – and he is too ill.

The star also said at Christmas she was unable to get a supermarket delivery slot and was unable to visit the store as she was isolating ahead of a planned visit to Derek.

Friend Emma Willis kindly reached out to M&S who sent Kate and her children a hamper of goodies.

Kate recalls: “We had this extraordinary situation where we didn’t have any bread but we had canapés. The kids would ask, ‘What’s for breakfast?’ ‘Canapés.’ ‘Can’t we have Rice Krispies?’ ‘No — we don’t have any. But you can have truffles!'”
