Kate Garraway thrilled as Britain 'no longer in pandemic' after Derek comes home

Kate Garraway has expressed her optimism at the “extraordinary news” we’ve “been waiting for”, just weeks after hubby Derek Draper returned home.

Derek, 53, had been battling COVID-19 since March last year, with symptoms so severe doctors had to induce a coma.

He eventually woke up last month, and broke down in emotional scenes from his hospital bed.

Since then, Kate has been keeping fans updated on his progress, including starring in ITV documentary Finding Derek in March.

And the broadcaster was delighted by the prospect of a light at the end of the tunnel, as the news broke that the coronavirus pandemic is now an endemic.

“This is extraordinary news,” Kate said on Good Morning Britain.

But she was quickly warned by Dr Amir Khan that “it’s not over yet”.

“It’s the news we’ve been waiting for, surely?” Kate asked.

Dr Amir explained: “They’re saying Britain has moved from a pandemic to an endemic, it’s going to make people think, ‘Oh thank God is this VE day, is it all over?”

He continued: “Hopefully we are turning the tide on this.

“We still need to take caution, we’ve seen in India what happens when you lift restrictions too quickly or you don’t have any restrictions at all.

“The vaccine is really good in bringing down the virus, but I wouldn’t say we’re yet out of (a pandemic) yet.”

Dr Amir discussed the latest news on the morning programme on Friday, saying: “It’s a very bold statement from a lady called Professor Sarah Walker, who’s the Chief Investigator of this study which has been in all the papers.

“What they’ve done is taken 1.6million swabs from people across the UK over the last few months and compared those swabs to people who haven’t been vaccinated or are yet to be vaccinated.

“What it shows is even having one dose of the vaccine reduces your risk of having the virus, getting symptoms, reduces your risk of symptomatic infection by 74 percent.

“But importantly it can reduce your risk of having no symptoms and having the virus by over 50 percent.”

He acknowledged: “We are hopefully turning the tide on the virus.”

However, Professor Walker, a scientist from Oxford University, said the situation could “quickly” escalate once more, and encouraged people to continue following government guidance.

Giving an update on Derek’s struggle with long Covid, Kate admitted: “It’s been wonderful having Derek at home and there have been a lot of little positives I think.

“And whether they are because it is genuinely helping his cognition [being at home] or if it is because I am there to see the little things you know.”
