Kate Garraway warned by doctors that Derek Draper 'may never come out of coma'

Piers Morgan issued a stark warning to those thinking of breaking the coronavirus rules that Kate Garraway ‘s husband Derek Draper “may never come out of his coma”, according to his doctors.

Back in March, Derek , 53, was taken straight into intensive care after he’d contracted Covid-19, with his wife Kate explaining last week that his body was still “ravaged” from the deadly disease.

This morning, Good Morning Britain host Piers, 55, who has been defiant throughout the pandemic with shaming those who opt to break the rules, pleaded with viewers to continue taking the restrictions seriously.

To ensure that his message was loud and clear he used Derek’s situation as a harrowing example.

Addressing the nation, Piers said: “We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband is still in a coma from Covid… he may never come out of that coma.

“She’s been told this, and it’s heartbreaking. It has hit right here on our show.

“It’s hit a lot of people; 100,000 people or more have now lost their lives – think of how many family members they all have.

Piers wanted to show how serious this virus can be and used Kate’s husband Derek as a harrowing example

“Multiply that, and you’re getting into millions of people directly affected by Covid-19.

“We’ve got to take this seriously and we’ve got to get vaccinated as fast as possible. That’s the only way through this.”

In other updates on the breakfast show, it was revealed that as a result of the virus Derek now has holes in his heart and lungs as well as losing a staggering eight stone in weight.

On the lead up to festive period, Kate bravely spoke to the GMB hosts about her husband’s situation and opened up about her feelings surrounding a Christmas without Derek.

The TV presenter admitted that she’d had to pull herself together after she’d began to reach “the end of her tether”.

With emotions running high and feeling “physically low”, she explained: “Derek’s still ravaged from the effects of Covid from way back in March, his recovery is incredibly uncertain.

“I’m trying to look for new things and new ways and talking to doctors about what we can do for him meanwhile people are still dying in extraordinary numbers – people that aren’t older and haven’t got underlying conditions, it’s unbearable.”

Fortunately for Kate, she was able to sneak in a visit to the hospital with her two children, Darcey and Billy to see their seriously-ill father just before the UK was plunged into a new six week lockdown at the start of January.
