Lorraine Kelly has applauded ITV for the way the crew handled the Covid-19 pandemic and has recognised how “incredible” Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway is after her challenging year.

In March 2020, Kate’s husband Derek was diagnosed with coronavirus and was in hospital, returning home only earlier this year, after over a year in the care of health staff.

Lorraine has stressed how the entire time at ITV were affected as they saw what was happening within Kate’s immediate family.

She said: “With that and having Dr Hillary [Jones] on our team, we were so on it at ITV.

“Everything was done so well in terms of safety and social distancing and hand-washing.”

The Scottish presenter praised Kate and said how “incredible” she has been as Derek returned home earlier this year, although he still requires a lot of care.

Derek is one of the people in the UK who has suffered with the long term effects of coronavirus since he was diagnosed, but as he returned home he has been making small steps.

Speaking on his recovery on GMB when he first returned home, Kate explained that he was receiving 24-hour care and that she was “trying to balance the emotions of the next stage”.

In a raw and emotional revelation, Kate shared the impact that Covid-19 has had on her family, particularly in regards to Derek’s next steps.

In the book, after explaining that his case was different to anything doctors had seen before, she explained how she questioned doctors on when they would know more on his recovery.

She wrote: “After a long pause, he [the doctor] looked straight at me, then away.

“‘Well, Kate’ – the first time he had used my name – ‘I think it’s fair to say if he is still like this after two years we will know there is very little chance of him making any meaningful recovery’.'”

Kate has been keeping her colleagues and friends updated on Derek’s recovery, telling Lorraine on ITV that Derek remembering her birthday made her cry happy tears.

She reminded him the evening before, but managed to remember the next day, which Kate was grateful for as she added on the morning show: “Signs like that are just fantastic.”
