Kerry Katona 'literally died' after cocaine-fuelled bender as she 'stopped breathing'

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins star Kerry Katona has revealed that she almost died during the height of her drug addiction.

The star, who found fame in girl group Atomic Kitten, has previously addressed her battles that saw her addicted to cocaine, a Class A substance in the UK.

While Kerry, 40, may be clean from drugs, she is keen to not forget about her past, explaining that it has shaped the person she is today.

Speaking openly about her experiences with the illegal substance, Kerry admits that it almost got the better of her at one point, admitting that she has “angels looking out for her”.

Writing in her New magazine column, she said: “The amount of coke I was once doing, I literally died.”

The former singer added: “I remember coming back [from the brink of death] with these beautiful figures around me and I felt so much love – that happened to me twice.

“I’d stopped breathing, so I know I have angels looking out for me.

“You can knock me down but you can’t keep me down.”

Kerry was first introduced to drugs by her mother, Sue, as just a young child after being given a “sherbet dip” that turned out to be Speed.

Speaking on Morning Live, Kerry reflected on her life, admitting that she is lucky to still be here after surviving addiction.

During the broadcast that aired in May earlier this year, she said: “I mean technically, I should be dead and I’m really proud of what I have achieved.

“And the reason why I’m talking about this is because if I can overcome these things, so many people out there can do it as well and it is achievable.

“I think also as well, surrounding yourself with the right people who are your friends as well and exercise is a massive, massive factor.”

She added: “But what I have just achieved, after 13 years of being bankrupt, twice!, I’ve just finally bought my own house!

“So for me, that’s a huge achievement, from going from the depths of low and despair and drugs and drink and divorces, I mean I could be here all day but I don’t think we’ve got the time!”

Going into detail about her drug addiction, Kerry revealed in July that the death of singer Whitney Houston had been the wake-up call she had long desired for.

Whitney died aged 48 in February 2012 after drowning caused by coronary artery disease and cocaine use, with a coroners report indicating that cocaine was taken shortly before her death, along with other drugs.

Writing in New Magazine, Kerry said: “Whitney Houston died, that was the biggest wake-up call for me about drugs ever.

“It wasn’t that I was addicted to cocaine, I was just so lost and so lonely that it was my only friend. It was all I had at the time and I wanted to die. I’m so lucky to be alive.”
