Leona Lewis says she has 'good' relationship with Simon Cowell 15 years after X Factor

In this week’s Jonathon Ross Show, The X Factor star Leona Lewis, 36, reveals she has a “good” relationship with music mogul Simon Cowell, 62, 15 years after winning the show in 2006.

During an interview with funnyman Jonathon Ross for his ITV show that airs on Saturday, The Bleeding Love singer revealed she’s still in contact with her X Factor mentor, despite leaving his record label Syco in 2014.

She tells Wossy: “It was [an amicable split] – we’re still good, we keep in contact, he checks in on me, I check in on him.”

Complimenting her former mentor, she adds: “Throughout the show, he was definitely a real mentor and really involved in helping me with song choices, arrangements. He’s been a big supporter.

“The X Factor was such a huge platform… It was at the time when YouTube was starting to bubble up… the videos would go viral, it was crazy.”

After winning the £1million recording contract with Simon’s label Syco back in 2006, beating Brookside star Ray Quinn with 60% of the final vote, Leona is one of the most significant victories to come out of the show.

Instantly joining Simon’s label Syco after her win, the star sold 60million records with the company before leaving eight years later to move to rival label, Island Records, in 2014.

The long-running talent competition where Leona found fame was axed for good in July after 17 years, with Simon saying he didn’t want it to “become a bit of a joke”.

The Better In Time singer said the show’s ending came at the right moment and that it’s important that the industry keeps moving with the times.

Leona says: “It was bound to happen at some point, and I feel like it was the right time. We are in a different day and age now, with streaming and all the different platforms that we are on — there is so much out there.”

The show, hosted by Graham Norton, is judged by Leona, icon Vanessa Williams, Drag Race’s Michelle Visage and the drag queen Trixie Mattel.

Leona was joined on The Jonathan Ross Show by actor, singer and comic Bradley Walsh plus comedians Russell Howard and Roisin Conaty.

The Jonathan Ross Show airs Saturday on ITV and ITV Hub at 10.35PM.
