Malin Andersson says appearing on Love Island pushed her to get plastic surgery

A former Love Island contestant has claimed that appearing on the show pushed her to get plastic surgery.

Malin Andersson, 28, appeared on the dating reality show in series two back in 2015 but nasty comments by trolls during the show drove her to get liposuction and a breast uplift in Turkey.

Malin, who was in her early-20s when the series went out, spoke on Lookfantastic’s new YouTube channel series, Fearless, and described a darker atmosphere behind the scenes than is presented.

Before she appeared on the programme Malin lived with an eating disorder and found it “overwhelming” when trolls started commenting on her appearance, reports The Mirror.

This fed into the narrative that she needed to change parts of her body and led to her going under the knife in Turkey.

Malin said: “It was overwhelming when I saw the trolling about my appearance.

“That added fuel to the fire and when I came out I thought, ‘right I’ve got to change my whole f***ing appearance, I need to get this done and that done.’

“My self-esteem plummeted completely.”

Malin described the pretense after the show of appearing like you are living the “high life” on social media, but in reality, you are “dying inside”.

“It’s all a farce, it’s absolute bull****,” she said.

“I booked myself into Turkey and went for a bit of lipo and a breast lift.

“But having that done didn’t solve anything that was going on in my head. It’s just a band aid.”

Malin described the following year after appearing on Love Island as the hardest as she struggled with the trappings of fame.

To make matters worse she also discovered that her mum’s breast cancer had returned and spread to her stomach.

Malin said: “I was in the party scene, still trying to get papped. It was so f***ing embarrassing, I had no real job – I was just promoting bull**** products trying to get dough.

“Everyone thinks you’re living the high life, but you’re suffering. I was suffering, still living at home with my mum who was ill.

“I was such a lost little soul. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life. I fell into a really dark place, the lowest I’d been to be fair.”

Sadly in 2017, her mum lost her battle with cancer at the age of 65 but more tragedy would strike Malin in January 2019 when her premature daughter, named Consy after her mum, died after 4 weeks.

Malin’s strength and resilience were applauded by those who commented on the YouTube interview.

One viewer wrote: “This was incredible to watch, thank you for being so brave and always being so raw and honest.”

While another wrote: “Wow I actually cried. Gorgeous.”.

In March last year, ITV released a statement announcing it would take a ‘proactive’ approach in continually updating its aftercare process for all contestants in future seasons.

It came after the news of Mike Thalassitis’ death following the tragic passing of the star who killed himself.

ITV has been approached for comment.
