Mary Poppins' Dick Van Dyke, 95, gives cash to job-seekers hit hard by pandemic

Actor Dick Van Dyke refused to turn a blind eye as he helped out job seekers with a cash hand-out.

The Mary Poppins star, 95, was running errands in sunny Malibu when he came across a queue at a nearby jobseekers centre.

Dick chatted to those left unemployed amid the harsh realities of the pandemic before popping to a cash machine and lending them a helping hand.

He handed out bills from a bag out of his car window, he and the jobseekers wearing protective face masks.

And onlookers said Dick appeared in good spirits as he performed the profound act of generosity.

He’s been a legend since he kickstarted his silver screen career in the 1950s.

But his real breakthrough came with 1964’s Mary Poppins, in which he plays one-man band, kite-seller and chimney sweep with a huge crush on Julie Andrews’ titular character.

This was followed up four years later by Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

He also landed his own show, the aptly named Dick Van Dyke Show, and made appearances on The Carol Burnett Show.

What A Way To Go and The Morning After are among Dick’s other big roles.

Meanwhile, in the last year, Dick has been overwhelmed by demand after signing up for celeb video messaging site Cameo.

“Due to overwhelming demand,” the profile reads, “Mister hasn’t been able to accommodate the influx of requests in the allotted time.

“He puts care and thought into each video. Please reorder, if expired.”

The videos give actor Dick the chance to let his humour shine.

In one, he tells a fan: “So you’ve turned 40? I’m 94, I’m not impressed.

“Don’t they say 40 is the new 30, something like that? I didn’t really get a break till I was 35 years old, so you’ve got a lot of time ahead of you.”

He sweetly adds to the camera: “I’ve always had this philosophy that there’s no such thing as an adult.

“An adult is just a disguise that a kid puts on so they can get through adult life,’ and unsurprisingly, the legendary star’s profile has since been quickly flooded with five-star reviews and plenty of praise from his legion of fans.
