Mum claims ‘creepy’ Martin Bashir did her ironing to lure her into BBC interview

A mum has claimed she was persuaded to appear on Panorama after Martin Bashir did her ironing.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, Karen Roche-Pearson said that Bashir has “totally lied” to get her to appear on the show and that she was glad to see him get his comeuppance over his interview with Princess Diana.

The 55-year-old was interviewed by Bashir in 1997 and described the journalist as a “creep”.

She said: “He was such a creep and would pretend to be nice by doing my ironing. He’d say ‘Oh, let me do that for you’.

“He comes across so nice, but he’s a nasty piece of work.”

She claimed he did her ironing in order to lure her into during an interview

Karen claimed that Bashir promised her kids toys in return for her speaking out after she agreed to be a surrogate for £12,000 but ended up keeping the baby, leading to a historic legal fight with the other couple.

But Karen claims that Bashir had led her to belie the BBC show would portray her as a victim, and the documentary “wasn’t what he said it was going to be”.

She said: “It was supposed to be on my side, the way he did it – he just totally lied. I was a big fan of Diana and he was saying, ‘I did the famous Diana interview’.”

Karen said she was pleased that Bashir was in the midst of a scandal surrounding his Diana interview

Karen says she turned down a large sum of money from a rival ITV documentary because she believe Panorama would tell the truth.

“I wanted people to know I had gone into it for the right reasons and I’d done nothing wrong, but that didn’t happen,” she said.

Karen added: “He’s not what he presents himself as. He’s a deceitful man – he was telling us one thing and doing another.

“He even took us to a fun park called Flamingo Land to film us and make it look as though we were on a day out, but in reality we just went on one ride for the camera and then he told us we had to leave.

“I complained to the BBC at the time, but my complaints were dismissed.”

Speaking on the recent scandal surrounding Bashir’s handling of famous 1995 interview with Princess Diana, she said: “I don’t know how he was able to do it and I do blame him now for Diana’s death.

“He was telling her lies just to get her to defend herself. I can’t understand how he was allowed to get away with that.”
