Nomadland's Frances McDormand howls like a wolf in emotional acceptance speech

If you’re looking for unexpected and often surprising acceptance speeches, then the Oscars is where you need to be, as this year’s 93rd Academy Awards did not fail to disappoint.

For actress Frances McDormand, the 2021 awards may be best remembered for her unpredictable howling at the moon.

Frances, 63, took centre stage along with director Chloé Zhao to accept Best Picture for the critically acclaimed film Nomadland.

During her acceptance speech, the star said: “Please, watch our movie on the largest screen possible.

“And one day, very, very soon, take everyone you know into a theatre, shoulder to shoulder, in that dark space and watch every film that is represented here tonight. We give this one to our wolf.”

The actress then made a shockingly ferocious howl.

Many who watched the award ceremony from home and those in the audience may have been fairly perplexed by Frances’s comical cries. But the star later revealed that it was in fact a tribute to Nomadland sound mixer Michael Wolf Snyder, who passed away earlier this year.

The award winner explained: “The howling is for our production designer Wolf who you saw in the In Memorium – we unfortunately lost him recently, and his name is Wolf and he’s the production sound mixer both on my previous film The Rider and Nomadland.

“He’s part of the family. So, that howling to the moon is for Wolf.”

Michael Wolf Snyder sadly passed away from suicide last month at the age of 35.

His body was tragically found by his father after he hadn’t heard from him his son in several days.

Taking to Facebook at the time, his father wrote: “Michael took his own life sometime in the last week and wasn’t discovered until I went to check on him Monday after he had dropped out of contact for several days.

“He has suffered from major depression for many years. For most people, this is an illness that waxes and wanes over the years.”

He added: “I’m sure it was difficult for Michael that he spent most of the last year alone in his small, Queens apartment, being responsible about dealing with the coronavirus.

“He seemed especially joyful and invigorated in these last few months since he was able to return to work on several different film projects.

“He was certainly thrilled about all of the accolades for Nomadland and told us many happy stories about his work on the film and the amazing people he got to spend time with.”

Following Michael’s death, Nomanland actress wrote a statement which read: “Wolf recorded our heartbeats.

“Our every breath. For me, he is Nomadland.”
