Piers Morgan regrets storming off Good Morning Britain during Alex Beresford row

Piers Morgan has admitted he regrets storming off Good Morning Britain during his now infamous row with Alex Beresford over Meghan Markle.

The TV regular says that on reflection he shouldn’t have acted as he did but he was left raging with fury by Alex’s comments.

Piers says he is more than happy to get ripped apart by guests on Good Morning Britain but was not willing to take it from someone on his own team.

Writing in his column for Mail on Sunday, Piers said of the row: “I knew it wasn’t a good look, the great snowflake-basher running away from confrontation.

“And on reflection, I shouldn’t have done it.

“But in the heat of the moment, in my rather strained state of mind, this seemed the less worse option.”

Piers says that, in part, his reaction was due to being “tired and agitated”.

He added that in his opinion, Alex “seemed equally uptight”.

Pieres added in his column: “As he delivered his censorious lecture… I felt the steam rising inside me.”

In a statement posted to Twitter on Thursday morning hours after the news broke of Piers’ decision to quit the show, Alex said: “There is so much that could be said.

“Piers’ departure sincerely wasn’t the conclusion I was hoping for.

“Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheeky on-air relationship.

“We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday morning, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.”

The weatherman continued: “I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It’s sad that we weren’t able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree.

“I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.

“Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He’s given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful. I wish him well!”

Piers’ comments about Meghan sparked over 57,000 official Ofcom complaints from angry viewers.

The feat means it is the most complained about TV moment in the UK of all time.

As well as lodging her own Ofcom complaint, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle also contacted the CEO of ITV to express her concern.

Piers claims that this was not made aware to him by ITV bosses until he had quit GMB.
