Simon Cowell discovered he was a 'natural recluse' after horror back injury and Covid

Simon Cowell has said that he realised he is a “naturally reclusive” person after his horror bike injury last year.

The showbiz legend has spent years in the spotlight with his hit talent shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, but he actually prefers to keep himself to himself.

Last year, Simon broke his back after falling off his electric motorcycle – and he had to be rushed into hospital to undergo emergency six-hour surgery.

62-year-old Simon had been testing out the new bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu, California in August when things took a terrible turn.

The music mogul broke his back in numerous places and narrowly missed breaking his spine – an injury so severe it could have left the star unable to walk again.

However, it seems Simon was forced to re-evaluate who he was and how he prefers to live his life after the bike disaster.

In fact, Simon found out that he is a “naturally reclusive person” after having to take time out in order to recover from his injury, as well as isolate during the pandemic.

Simon and his stunning partner Lauren Silverman spoke exclusively to Daily Star at the Together For Short Lives Ball on Tuesday November 10.

When asked if his injury allowed him to spend more time with his family, Simon said: “Yeah. I think what I realised is I’m naturally reclusive. So I was very good in quarantine.”

Simon’s girlfriend Lauren Silverman, who was beside him at the event, then quipped: “Yeah, this is late for us!”

The BGT boss agreed: “Yeah. It didn’t bother me at all. It was just one of those things.”

Simon went on to explain that his “protective instinct” kicked in during the pandemic, which forced him to make sure his nearest and dearest were happy and healthy.

He said: “Your protective instinct kicks in which is just make sure nobody around you gets it.. I’ve had about 1000 tests. Lauren’s had about the same.

“I never would have believed a year ago that we’d be at an event like this.”

During his chat with Daily Star, Simon also teased some further changes to his iconic ITV show, Britain’s Got Talent, which is returning to our screens in 2022.

When asked if he’d changed the format of the show, Simon replied: “Yeah, a little bit.”

The star elaborated: “We’ve had some good ideas. I mean, we just had some good ideas because we had to pull the show at the very, very last moment.

“And because we were going to shoot this in January this year – and that was before the second variant came along.

“So we had to make a last-minute decision. We just had to cancel it.”
