Strange reasons musicians have been sacked from bands – eating salad to being too clumsy

The Offspring’s drummer Pete Parada has claimed he was ditched from the band for refusing to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

Parada, 48, says his doctor told him not to get the jab due to him having a rare medical condition – but he was removed from The Offspring ahead of their upcoming tour.

And Parada isn’t the only musician to be fired for a strange reason, as Daily Star reveals.

Let’s bounce: Doug Bougie was initially Queen’s bass player before they hired John Deacon. He played a couple of gigs with Freddie Mercury and co, but was given the heave-ho due to him leaping around too much on stage. Brian May later said of Bougie that he “jumped up and down in a manner most incongruous”.

Thorny situation: In 2003, it was reported that Slade bassist Dave Glover had got engaged to notorious serial killer Rose West while she was serving her life sentence in Durham Prison. While Glover denied that he was planning to wed the murderer, the damage was done and he was sacked by Slade’s lead guitarist Dave Hill.

Stolen goods: Emo rockers My Chemical Romance ended up having to fire their drummer Michael Pedicone after he was caught stealing from the band following a concert in the US. The incident, in 2011, saw Pedicone confess to the police and be replaced by Jarrod Alexander.

Fall guy: Late The Fall frontman Mark E Smith was known for firing band members on a whim and was the only consistent member of the group during its 41 years. But the most ridiculous sacking came in 1994, when Smith kicked the group’s sound engineer Rex Sergeant out for eating a salad in front of him.

The replacements: The original line-up of Destiny’s Child saw LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson part of the group alongside Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland. But in 2001, Luckett and Roberston found out they had been axed when they saw the video for song Say My Name and realised they had been replaced. It turned out they had been trying to remove Beyoncé’s dad Matthew Knowles as manager, so he promptly kicked them out.

Let it be: Punk band Sex Pistols fired their bassist Glen Matlock in 1977 for being too big a fan of The Beatles. At first, the group claimed the split was amicable, but later in an interview their manager Malcolm McLaren told a reporter he got rid of Matlock because “he went on too long about Paul McCartney.”

Bad trip: US guitarist Dave Navarro only recorded one album with The Red Hot Chilli Peppers before he was fired in 1998 for being too clumsy.

Bye handsome: There have been many thoughts on why drummer Pete Best was fired from The Beatles in 1962. One suggestion is that Paul McCartney and John Lennon were threatened by Best’s looks as they thought he was too attractive.
