The Crown Matt Smith pays moving tribute to 'the man' Prince Philip after death

Matt Smith, who played the Duke of Edinburgh in the Netflix hit The Crown, has paid his respects to Prince Philip in a warm statement.

The actor, 38, wanted to share his deepest sympathies with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family after The Palace had announced that Prince Philip had peacefully died.

Having played the role of the Duke for the first two seasons on the royal drama, he made a touching tribute adding that Prince Philip “was the man”.

Then going on to thank him for his “service” to Great British public and the United Kingdom.

Speaking to the Express, Matt said: “I’d like to offer my condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family.

“Prince Philip was the man. And he knew it. 99 and out, but what an innings. And what style.

“Thank you for your service old chap – it won’t be the same without you.”

His words follow a tribute from The Crown’s creator and writer Peter Morgan.

He penned: “Netflix, Left Bank Pictures, Sony Pictures Television and the production team on The Crown are deeply saddened to hear of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh.

“Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad time.”

Earlier today, Buckingham Palace announced that His Royal Highness Prince Philip had died on Friday, aged 99.

The statement read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

“Further announcements will be made in due course.

“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
