Bake Off fans fume over 'harsh' correction as Prue shut down star in blunder

Prue Leith brutally corrected one contestant’s grammar on The Great British Bake Off on Tuesday night (October 4).

For Mexican night the bakers had the challenge of baking a selection of Mexican themed treats and bakes – much to the delight of viewers.

Bake Off contestant Janusz, who grew up in Poland, was excited to make his cacti-themed Mexican Conchas.

But when talking Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith through his recipe and plans – he was shut down by one of the judges for making a grammar blunder.

English isn’t Janusz’s first language

Explaining how he was decorating the sweet treats to look like “cactuses”, Prue corrected him instantly and scolded: “cacti” in a stern voice.

Janusz quickly corrected himself, clearly slightly annoyed that he didn’t get the pronunciation and grammar correct – but viewers at home slammed Prue for her brutality.

“Hey @PrueLeith – whilst Cacti is the Latin pluralisation of cactus – a totally acceptable English plural is Cactuses. How do you say it in Polish?” asked one viewer.

Prue came under fire from fans

“Cactuses is also right. If you’re going to correct someone whose first language isn’t English, make sure you’re right,” penned a second in defence of Janusz.

A third person then said: “Backing Janusz and his cactuses/cacti all the way.”

While a fourth fumed at the judge and challenged her when they said: “Don’t correct Janusz! Not until you can say ‘cacti’ in Polish.”

Fans of the show were up in arms over the correction

And a fifth said: “Aye like you would know what cacti was in Polish, Prue #GBBO.”

Janusz moved to the UK 10 years ago and now lives on the southeast coast with his boyfriend, Simon.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night’s show, fans slammed the programme for not getting the pronunciations of Mexican cuisines correct.

Taking to Twitter one fumed: “No attempt to pronounce anything right.”

While another said: “I love Bake Off, but Mexican week was a mistake. Tacky jokes about Mexican stereotypes and no attempt to properly pronounce the language (from Noel/Matt). Hopefully it’s a one-off.”

The Great British Bake Off airs every Tuesday night at 8pm on Channel 4 and All4.
