BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker still missing as he addresses continued show absence

BBC Breakfast underwent another huge presenting shake-up on Wednesday (January 5), as regular host Dan Walker was still missing from the programme.

Instead, Dan was replaced on the red sofa by Jon Kay, who was at the helm with regular host Sally Nugent.

Dan usually presents the show with Sally from Monday to Wednesday each week, while Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt tend to take over in the latter part of the week.

However, Dan has been absent from the show all week.

Fans have been left baffled by the shake-up, which has involved a stream of temporary presenters including Ben Thompson, Luxmy Gopal and Katherine Downes.

One baffled fan tweeted: “I do like to see you on the red sofa Dan. feels like I’ve missed on some news, have you moved to another thing or just having a lie in?”

“#bbcbreakfast where’s Dan the dancing man too then?” someone else wondered.

Now the Strictly Come Dancing star has addressed his lengthy absence on social media, as he joked Sally Nugent had told him she was taking an extended holiday.

Taking to Twitter, Dan shared a snap of Sally grinning alongside Tuesday’s host Ben Thompson with the caption: “What? You told me #bbcbreakfast wasn’t on this week and that you were ‘in the Maldives’!”

Sally responded to the tweet to simply write: “Awks” with a cringing emoji.

However, it seems the true reason for Dan’s absence is a lot more benign, as he has been enjoying some well-deserved family time after an intense year – working on Breakfast, Football Focus and Strictly.

The star posted a snap on Tuesday from Chatsworth Estate in Bakewell, writing: “Gorgeous afternoon at @ChatsworthHouse with the family. Freezing but lovely.

“P.S. the people in the photo are not my family!”

But he couldn’t resist tuning into Tuesday’s instalment of BBC Morning Live, where his Strictly partner Nadiya Bychkova was performing a Strictly fitness routine to their iconic lobster dance.

Host Gethin Jones couldn’t resist taking a cheeky swipe at Dan’s stint on the show, as he told Nadiya: “And you needed a couple of weeks off, after getting over dancing with Dan Walker for 10 weeks! After an amazing Strictly… especially when you had to go through this!”

He added: “Strictly fitness today, a bit of lobster. I know Dan’s watching at home and he’s delighted that it’s a new dance craze for 2022!”
