Corrie's Maureen Lipman branded 'harsh' on The One Show after rejecting script

Coronation Street ‘s Dame Maureen Lipman was branded as “harsh” by The One Show host Jermaine Jenas after diva antics were revealed on Wednesday’s programme.

Alex Jones and Jermaine were joined on the programme by comedy writer Lucy Beaumont and Corrie icons Rula Lenska and Maureen – who had once been flat mates as well as co-stars on the ITV soap.

But before they could kick off the discussion they were hit with technical difficulty with Maureen joining via video link and having difficulty hearing.

Addressing Lucy, the Welsh presenter said: “So Lucy you and Maureen have worked together before on a radio sitcom?”

Jermaine and Alex were joined by Lucy Beaumont, Rula Lenska and Maureen Lipman

“She used to ignore me like that too,” joked Lucy.

There was giggles all around as Alex continued: “You were a bit nervous at first of asking Maureen to star in it initially?”

In response, she told Alex: “Maureen is like my comedy icon, obviously we’re from Hull.

“The producer said, she won’t do it and I said ‘I’m going to ask her’.

Lucy added: “I sent her like an email that was three pages long and with a script and then she just wrote back: ‘If you improve it, I’ll do it.'”

Jermaine told Maureen she’d been a bit “harsh” with her feedback

The whole studio erupted into fits of laughter, even Maureen as Jermaine interjected: “Wow. That’s a bit harsh.”

“No, but it worked,” insisted the northern comedy writer.

There appeared to be an air of awkwardness as Jermaine chimed: “I like it,” before moving on with the interview which then turned even more tense.

He said: “Now Rula and Maureen, you both know each other very well, you starred in Corrie together and you’re also flat mates together in real life, I hear?”

Rula and Maureen later disagreed on air

Actress Rula corrected: “Only there in Manchester, not here in London.”

“No, but I also hear it was very clear from the moment you moved in together that you knew straight away that you were very different people,” quizzed the football pundit and BBC host.

“Well that’s what Mo always says but I think we’re rather similar, we of the same age, we’re both grannies, we’re both passionate about our grandchildren, passionate about animals and just passionate,” beamed Rula.

While Maureen argued: “Come on Rula, lets have the truth.”

The Dame explained: “I came to Manchester with a lemon squeezer that was it and some shoes and Rule was in her flat with galls that covered the lampshade, rugs, pillows that were special and stuffed with lavender, she brought everything, we had to move her into the flat with a porters trolly in a blizzard in Manchester.

Maureen added : “And she loves to cook, don’t you Darling? And I’m just happy to put my feet up and eat nuts.”

The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm weekdays.
