Dave Grohl's kids now – rock star, following dad's footsteps and Nirvana obsessed

Rock music legend Dave Grohl is celebrating another year around the sun and to commemorate his big day we’re having a closer look at what his offspring are up to now.

The Foo Fighters frontman was born on January 14, 1969, and initially rose to fame as the drummer in Nirvana.

He has led a rather wild life which has been non-stop Rock ‘n’ Roll and even starred in a few Hollywood films, however, this doesn’t mean he hasn’t had the time to grow his own family.

With three young daughters, Dave has his hands full of parental drama rather more than drum sticks nowadays but he still finds the time to perform worldwide.

Since 2003, he has been married to producer and director Jordyn Blum and the couple share three girls Violet, Harper, and Ophelia.

Dave and Jordyn welcomed their first baby girl, Violet Maye Grohl, on April 15, 2006.

Violet, 16, so far has gone on to show that dad Dave isn’t the only rock star in the Grohl gang.

In 2018, she jumped on stage to perform with her dad at a charity gig and covered Adele’s When We Were Young.

At 13 years old, Violet also joined her dad and other surviving members of Nirvana – Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear – for another charity show concert.

Since then, Violet has been a frequent fixture at Foos shows, having memorably joined the band at their Leeds Festival headline set in 2019.

She also provided backing vocals on the group’s 10th and most recent album Medicine At Midnight.

Talking about her feature, Dave told the BBC: “It seemed very natural [but] it didn’t seem official until my accountant called a few months ago and asked where she should deposit Violet’s cheque.

“And I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ She said, ‘Well, she sang on the album so she has to be paid for playing on the record.’ And I said, ‘You can take that money and give it to me, and I’ll put it in an account for Violet that she can open when she’s 18 years old!’”

Harper Grohl

Dave’s middle child Harper Willow Grohl was welcomed into the world on April 17, 2009.

Like her older sister, Harper, 11, has also followed in her father’s musical footsteps.

Harper had her debut drumming performance at Iceland’s Secret Solstice Festival in June 2017.

At just eight years old at the time, she got up and joined the Foo Fighters on stage to play Queen’s We Will Rock You.

Harper is also especially interested in her dad’s past life with Nirvana and once recited all the words to a song without him ever playing it to her.

Chatting on The Howard Stern Show, Dave recalled: “Come As You Are came on the radio, and she started singing. She’s saying every word! I’ve never played her that record, we don’t talk about Nirvana and stuff, and she was singing every word to the song!”

He also revealed that she had asked him if later singer Kurt Cobain was shy.

Dave was slightly shocked as this was the first question Harper had ever asked about Nirvana.

He explained: “I was like, ‘Yeah, he kind of was.’ And then she said, ‘Was he shy around people he didn’t know – or was he also shy around people he did know?’ And it was interesting, it was really the first time she started really asking me questions about Kurt. That was a first. It was great.”

Ophelia Grohl

Dave and Jordyn’s youngest daughter, Ophelia Saint Grohl, was born on August 1, 2014.

Ophelia, 8, also has a slice of rock and roll in her and has grown to be part of The Grohlettes, which consists of Ophelia and her two sisters.

The girls all joined their famous dad during a 2019 appearance on Ryan’s Mystery Playdate and for his tribute song to Nandi Bushell in 2020.

Talking about his talented trio, Dave told PBS NewsHour: “In my house, I’ve got a full rock band. And they’re all women, and it makes me really happy to see. It’s really cool.”

Happy Birthday, Dave!
