Dawn French wants to be buried in full Vicar of Dibley costume in gold Perspex casket

Dawn French certainly knows how to put the fun into funerals after she shared her plans to be buried in her iconic Vicar of Dibley costume.

On Tuesday (November 29), the stand-up comic, 64, appeared on the premiere episode of Kathy Burke’s new podcast, Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, which sees celebrity guests asked to imagine their deaths and funerals.

And it’s fair to say fans weren’t disappointed with the hosts first guest as she opened up about her plans for her corpse when she dies.

She explained how she wanted to be laid to rest in a solid gold-like casket “like a sarcophagus” with a Perspex lid so that she can be seen in her “full vestments” at her funeral.

When she was asked what her dream funeral would be like, the mum-of-one revealed: “I’d like to be embalmed properly – full makeup with lashes. In possibly, a vicar outfit.”

But that’s not all she has planned, as she went on to add that there should be floral tributes spelling out “Help” and “Not Dead” next to her coffin as she is paraded around Cornwall in a transparent hearse “like a lovely big Barbie”.

Giving further details of the design of the hearse, adding: “Things should be spelled out [on the sides of the hearse]. And I’m torn between this, and perhaps you can help me with this.

“Either it says, like one side it will say something like legend but spelled ‘L e g j i N D’ Legend, and then on the other side it says ‘sl*t’.”

And it appears as though her ex-partners will have a part to play in her final “low-key” send-off too.

She laughed: “This is all low-key, obviously. I would like a sort of wake behind of previous lovers and concubines.”

Another condition she thought out during her appearance on the darkly funny podcast, was that her eulogy would be written by the Vicar of Dibley author Richard Curtis.

The touching tribute would then be read by her comedy partner and close friend Jennifer Saunders because “it would kill her to have to say so many nice things about me”.

Then before her burial, her coffin would be raised upright at the entrance of Cornwall, to greet new arrivals travelling to the seaside town.

She joked: “The Perspex front has two holes with my t**s coming through, and if you want you can rub them for luck as you enter Cornwall.”

French is currently starring alongside Julian Clary and Alexandra Burke in the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk at the London Palladium.
