DJ Zed star Zahid Butt dies aged 49 on New Year's Eve after tragic cancer battle

Zahid Butt, known as DJ Zed, has passed away at the age of 49 – following a short battle with cancer.

The Scottish DJ passed away in the early hours of New Year’s Eve (December 31) after being diagnosed with cancer – his family have confirmed.

The musician previously wowed crowds at huge festivals like T in the Park and BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

His death was confirmed by his daughter Amna – who revealed that her family had been “shocked” by the wave of support for Zahid from locals in Dundee, Scotland, where he lived.

Amna told The Daily Record that her father was buried on Friday afternoon at Dundee’s Muslim cemetery in the hours after his death – which honours Islamic rules.

She admitted that she was “surprised and shocked” – in a good way – to see everyone turn up for the funeral.

Amna said: “I was surprised and shocked, in a good way, to see everyone turn up for the funeral.

“He loved absolutely everyone, and would have been so, so happy to see all the people that turned up for him.

“One of my friends said they had never seen this many non-Muslims at a Muslim funeral.”

She continued that people had abandoned their New Year’s Eve plans for her dad in an amazing show of support.

She went on: “It was New Year’s Eve and everyone left their plans for my dad: my friends, my brother’s friends, the whole of Dundee, regardless of religion, colour, any of that. The non-Muslims even came to the mosque and prayed with us as well.”

She added that even those who weren’t Muslims came to pray at the mosque with the family.

Amna said: “The non-Muslims even came to the mosque and prayed with us as well.

“If that doesn’t show how many people from different communities loved him and wanted to be there for him, I don’t know what does.”

Mike McDonald, the boss of Dundee Dance Event, credits Zahid with keeping the annual city-wide festival alive.

He said: “If it wasn’t for Zed, who knows if DDE would have returned after the two events that took place in the late 90s.

“He was the one that said back in 2010, ‘why don’t you do another DDE’. The following year it was back.”

Zahid is survived by his daughter Amna, son Qamar and wife Zarqa.
