Drew Barrymore hit with racism claims after copying 'black men frolicking' trend

Drew Barrymore has been branded a racist after she shared a TikTok video of herself lapping up the rain in California.

A social media user has claimed Barrymore, 47, had copied a trend which has been labelled “black men frolicking” which had been created by black TikTok creators earlier in the year.

User @amushroomblacky has claimed Drew was an example of a coloniser who “disrespected” and “dismissed” boundaries set by black content creators.

Taking to the video sharing platform, they said: “You and I both know you are capable of enjoying the rain, frolicking freely, without filming it and posting it to TikTok.”

They added that Drew “co-signed people who just go out of their way to disrespect and dismiss the boundaries that black creators have set.

“And now you’re one of those people.”

Drew’s video which she shared on her TikTok profile frustrated the user as she rushed outside to make the most of the rain following a recent drought in California.

She told her online fans: “Whenever you can, go out into the rain. Do not miss the opportunity.”

Drew has been accused of copying a trend which was originally started by TikTok user @thexsadxoptimistic, who posted a video of himself in May, running through a field.

In the clip, he said: “oh my God, I’m running through a field frolicking.”

His video had since gone viral alongside the hashtag #blackmenfrolicking which has since seen the hashtag be used over 600,000 times.

Following the criticism, many fans have flocked to social media to defend Drew against the allegations.

Shukri Abdullahi Abdirahman said: “I’m so utterly confused. Somebody, please explain to the connection between frolicking in the rain and black people? Are there historical atrocities committed against black people by a white person(s) frolicking in the rain? My questions are genuine.”

“I have watched this video 6 times could someone please explain to me why it’s racist,” said one fan.

Before a second typed: “I still don’t understand why that woman is mad at Drew Barrymore. Never been so confused in my life. Is enjoying rain racist?”

“Someone is seriously trying to imply that Drew Barrymore is ‘a racist’ for frolicking in rain?! Barrymore is NOT trying to dismiss black influencers! PLAYING IN THE RAIN was NOT created by black people OR Drew Barrymore!” fumed another.

Drew has previously spoken about her viral video, telling People: “I’m such a hippie that when I see the rain, I just think I want to go out in it and have a little baptism from Mother Nature and be free and not worried for a second.

“I do worry and stress a lot. I’m also not a hippie (sometimes) and really a person who wants to have action and be a business person and get things done.

“And with that comes a tremendous amount of pressure and stress…Rain is a signal for me to let go and stop overthinking everything.”

Drew Barrymore’s representatives did not respond when approached by the Daily Star.
