EastEnders fans left fuming as BBC soap taken off channel in major schedule shake-up

EastEnders fans were left “fuming” tonight after the show was booted from BBC One to make way for Wimbledon.

For the first time ever, the network ditched the soap and forced viewers to turn into BBC Two to catch up on the latest storylines from Albert Square.

The change is expected to last two weeks after the channel had to shake up its schedule for the annual tournament, but EastEnders will still be shown at its usual time of 7.30pm, Monday to Thursday.

When the news was announced the Queen Vic was on the move, one tweeted: “Silly moving EastEnders off BBC One for Wimbledon. Many evenings no British players and low ratings so be fine leaving it on BBC 2.”

Another suggested: “Why don’t they just make BBC2 a sports channel and leave EastEnders where it is? It would be so much easier”.

While a third stated: “Come on #EastEnders it’s like you want to sabotage the ratings, such as shame as EastEnders is so so good at the moment. You should have kept it on BBC1 and moved Wimbledon to BBC2. Fuming”.

The move will begin tonight, June 27, until mid-August to avoid Wimbledon clashes.

This means viewers will be able to watch the programme whenever it suits on BBC iPlayer, or to tune in as the episodes air on BBC Two.

Despite the change of channels from BBC One to BBC Two, the soap will continue to be shown at the same time of 7.30pm Monday to Thursday.

Tonight’s episode will see some major drama as Kat and Sharon prepare for the grand opening of Peggy’s

But the event turns sour when Sharon and Kat discover that Shirley has trashed the place.

Shirley claims that it’s payback for the number of times the Mitchells have hurt her family.

Shirley vows that she won’t end her vendetta, but the row is cut short when two men enter with a gun.

Shirley takes cover in the office, while Kat and Sharon try to call Sam for help.

As the situation comes to a head, a gunshot rings out.

Elsewhere, Bernie tells Rainie that she can only have Roland if she leaves Stuart.

When Stuart finds out what’s going on, he tells Rainie that he’s ending things between them.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One at 7.30pm
