Emmerdale wins big at Inside Soap Awards – despite losing major gong to EastEnders

Emmerdale has walked away with an incredible collection of new accolades after a bumper year at the Inside Soap Awards.

The ITV soap beat out its rivals Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks to scoop the most awards at the star-studded ceremony.

But it lost out on one major gong to its BBC counterpart, as Walford-based EastEnders was awarded the Best Soap award overall.

Emmerdale, however, was awarded the Best Actor award for Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle. His stroke storyline this year also saw him scoop the Best Serial Drama Award at this year’s National Television Awards.

It’s been a big week for Mark Charnock after winning at the NTAs and Inside Soap Awards

It was a bumper year for the actor, too, as the Inside Soap Awards also saw Marlon’s stroke win the Best Storyline award – with Mark and on-screen wife Zoe Henry (Rhona Goskirk) scooping the Best Romance gong.

Marlon and Rhona finally exchanged vows in a poignant wedding ceremony earlier this year, as Marlon managed to walk for the first time since his stroke to meet his new bride down the aisle.

Meena Jutla star Paige Sandhu, meanwhile, was awarded the trophy for Best Villain after her serial killer storyline in the soap – despite missing out on an NTA last week.

EastEnders also brought home the payload in terms of awards, as Jean in Southend won the Best Showstopper award, while Jean Slater actress Gillian Wright was awarded the Best Actress accolade.

Heather Peace scooped an award for Best Newcomer for her portrayal of Eve Unwin in EastEnders, while Lacey Turner was immortalised with the Inside Soap All-Time Icon for her work as Stacey Slater.

Coronation Street wasn’t far behind, as the Platts won the Best Family award, and Evelyn Plummer star Maureen Lipman was awarded the Best Comic Performance gong.

Isabella Flanagan, who plays Hope Stape, beat her Emmerdale star sister Amelia Flanagan for the first time to walk away with the award – also beating her Corrie co-star Jude Riordan, who plays Sam.

Axed soap Neighbours didn’t walk away empty handed, either, as Paul Robinson star Stefan Dennis was branded the Best Daytime Star, and Neighbours awarded the Best Daytime Soap gong.
